To One and All:
Well, I hope
your Club won in one of the Midwest Championship Playoffs that took place over
the past few weeks, and I wish the rest better luck in the future, and don't
forget to recruit everyday of the year, year in, year out. Scores from
this past weekend's Collegiate Men's and Women's Division I and II Final 4
Championships are below, and also listed on www.midwestrugby.org.
----- On the Men's side of the game . . .
There's a great story about a Midwest guy who's made the Eagles on www.RugbyMag.com . . . Phil Thiel use to
play for the Alliance U19 Rugby Club, and he was a star football player at Traverse City West high school in
Michigan. He went to Saginaw Valley State University on a
football scholarship, which didn't work out, and he went back to Traverse
City to play Rugby for the Traverse Bay Blues . . . his coach, Tony 'Rugby'
Dell'Acqua, sent him off to Cinderford, England, to learn the game at a faster
pace, and then Scott Lawrence of Life University recruited Phil when he returned
. . . Phil started playing for Life in '07, and you might say the rest is
history . . . he is the starting Hooker for the Eagles and played all 80 minutes
Saturday against Uruguay, which the Eagles beat 27 to 22 in
the Eagles run to qualify for the next World Cup. To read Alex Goff's
article on Phil, and a few others go to http://www.rugbymag.com/news/national-teams/men/from-traverse-city-to-the-eagles.aspx.

----- On the Collegiate front . . .
Congratulations to all the Collegiate Clubs in the Final 4 of each Division that
took place this past weekend.
In the Men's Division I Bowling Green State University took 1st place by beating
Ohio State University on Saturday 55 to 32, and then Indiana University on
Sunday 21 to 10 in the Championship match. Bowling Green will move on
to the USA Rugby National Collegiate Round of 16 as the #14 seed and open
against the National #3 seed, Southern California #1 . . . that's the ONLY seed
we have left in Collegiate Men's Division I. It was an all Eastern
Conference Final 4 since all the EC Clubs won in the Quarterfinals.
In the Women's Division I it was the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee beating
the University of Michigan 39 to 12, and then the University of Northern
Iowa 15 to 5 in the Championship match. UW - Milwaukee will go into
the National Round of 16 as the #9 seed and play the #8 seed, Pacific #3.
UNI will go in as the #15 seed and play the #2 seed, Pacific #1.
Some may consider both Division I Champions upset winners since both lost to
their respective Championship match foe in League play.
In the Men's Division II it was the number 3 seed out of Wisconsin that won it
all . . . the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater beat St. John's
University 30 to 26 on Saturday, and then Miami University 13 to 12 on Sunday in
the Championship match. UW - Whitewater will enter the National Round of
16 as the #2 seed and play the #15 seed, Northeast #3. Miami will enter
the Round of 16 as the #4 seed and play the #13 seed, Northeast #2.
In the Women's Division II Slippery Rock University beat Ball State University
46 to zip, and then beat Winona State University 27 to 24 in the Championship
match. Slippery Rock will enter the Round of 16 as the
#5 seed and play the #12 seed, Southern California #1. Winona will enter
the Round of 16 as the #6 seed and play the #11 seed, South #2, and Gustavus
Adolphus College, Midwest #3, will enter the Round of 16 as the #8 seed and
play the #9 seed, Northeast #2.

----- On the Youth front . .
.
USA Rugby also has a page on State Based Rugby Organizations (SBRO), and the
Midwest has 3, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, that are recognized by the USA Rugby
Board of Directors and the Congress as Level 3 SBROs, and none on the Emerging
list, www.usarugby.org/goto/sbro
. . . don't worry when the url goes to http://www.usarugby.org/default.asp .
. . you have reached the right page! I wonder how many of Youth
Organizations in the Midwest have applied to be a State Based Rugby Organization
. . . that is the way USA Rugby is going. Right now there are a total of
12 SBROs, with another 5 on the Emerging list . . . here's hoping states like
Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are moving in that direction.
-----
----- In general . . .
There's a guy who has a bunch of old Rugby Magazines all the way from 1984 . . .
he thought someone might want them for the cost of shipping them before he
tosses them. He already tried Craig's list, and this will be his last
effort. He's pretty sure he's only missing 15 issues. Contact Tim
Britt, timbri...@yahoo.com, for
more information.
-----
I'll have all the USA Rugby
National Championship links up sooner than later, and I'll keep sending out my
newsletter updating all of you on Rugby in the Midwest and from USA Rugby too .
. . being as transparent as possible is one of the fastest ways Rugby will
grow in America . . . Rugby news must get to everyone, just like all the other
sports in the USA.
This fall
was a GREAT fall in getting scores and stories, with updates and all . . . I
appreciate the fantastic effort put forth . . . I thank all of you
very much!
