To One and All:

This week we've got quite a few non-league scores along with ALL of the Midwest League results, I think . . . all the results I have are listed below . . . enjoy . . .

There are two Clubs looking for a Coach . . .
1) The Chicago Sirens are looking for a head coach for this fall season and the future.  Contact the Club President Trudy Mesik, tas.mesik@hotmail.com, for more information.  They don't have a regular website at this time, but you can see what they are up to through their Facebook site, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chicago-Sirens-Womens-Rugby-Football-Club/18832042435.

2) The University of Wisconsin - River Falls is seeking a Rugby Coach for this fall season and spring season.  They have had 30+ guys at every practice.  For interested individuals please contact Crague Cook, cragu...@uwrf.edu, 608-658-6011, and/or Stefan Berg: Stefa...@uwrf.edu, 612-990-6230.  More details will be sent to individuals interested in the Coaching position.

     A small editorial . . .

I've had a few people tell me I was NOT correct with my statement about our Thunderbirds when I said they got 'whacked' . . . well, to me if you get beat by 33 points you pretty much got whacked.  I mean heck, if a QB throws 3 or 4 interceptions that all turn into touchdowns, and the team loses by 3 or 4 touchdowns, they got whacked . . . there's hardly a mention that the game would turned out different IF the QB hadn't had a bunch of passes intercepted.  If you enter a match, start getting emotional about everything because of the pressure the other Club is putting on you and you aren't staying cool, calm, and collected it will reflect on the way you play, i.e., you'll start makin' mistakes, getting penalties, passing a ball that get intercepted, and things like that . . . it's all part of the game.  I did get it wrong about the players that didn't get to play . . . Bart Bottorff gave each Player the opportunity to play in the 10s Tournament . . . only 2 Players took him up on his offer.  I'm sorry if some of you thought I was to harsh, but hey, we aren't getting any better as far as the general Rugby Enthusiast is concerned.

     USA Rugby Coaching Clinics . . .
To check out everything about Coaching Workshops I'd start here, http://www.usarugby.org/information/default.asp?NavPageID=59896#i_300362.  The website for Registering was or still is having some problems, and if that continues you may need to Register through the paper method, http://usarugby.org/media/EDocs/Paper_Registration_Form_12108.pdf.  I didn't find any Workshops for the rest of the year in the Midwest, but there are the two Workshops USA Rugby offers in St. Louis on the 21st and 22nd of November, which is good for a lot of you.  Get Certified, and especially if you're going into High School/U19 Rugby.

There is another course, with the application process being opened yesterday . . . it is the Advanced Coaching Course 2010, which will actually be two courses, i.e., one for High School and Collegiate Coaches, and the other for Club and Select Side Coaches.  They say the course is closely aligned with the iRB Level III course, which, in turn, is aligned with the Level III courses offered in England, Scotland, Wales, and New Zealand.  The schedule for the course will, most likely, be three weekends in the January and February, June and July, and November and December time frames.  Coaches interested in applying for the ACC need to contact Mollie McCarthy, mmcc...@usarugby.org, for an application.  You need to apply as soon as possible due to the fact that an ACC is limited in numbers.  Each application will receive full consideration by a selection panel.
     The iRB . . .
Olympic Campaign:  As you know I haven't sent out a newsletter with an attachment since I started sending out my newsletter back in 2002 as a courtesy to all of you that get e-mails with attachments blocked, and also to make sure I'm reaching as many Midwest Rugby Enthusiasts as possible.  I don't plan on changing that policy now or in the future.  Plus, an attachment goes away as soon as the message is deleted unless it is saved, and then you need to go back and 'fetch' whatever you saved . . . that's not a great answer to things we all need to refer to on an ongoing basis.  So, with all that being said I've posted the iRB's Olympic Campaign PDF that many of you received yesterday, http://www.midwestrugby.org/09irbolympiccampaign.htm.  If you haven't read it please do so.  For all of you please get involved as much as possible in all our efforts to get Rugby back into the Olympics . . . there are many points the document has that will help you with your local media, and many points are there that will keep all of us on the same page when discussing Rugby in the Olympics with anyone or any media source.

iRB Law 3 - National Variation:  As of the 14th of September there is a new set of rules that cover Law 3.14, specifically, in regards to how many players can be on a Roster, which will now be predicated on how many suitably Trained and Experienced Front Row players are on the Roster.  The Variation is to be applied in ANY match leading toward a USA Rugby National Championship.  For all the details from USA Rugby go to this link, http://www.midwestrugby.org/irblaw3variation.htm . . . that is a MUST read for everyone.
The USA Rugby National 7s Coach, Al Caravelli, had a 7s Camp recently and three invited Midwest players attended.  Congratulations goes out to Mark Roberts of the Chicago Lions, and to two players from Pearl City, Keikiokalani Misipeka and Shalom Suniula.  The Camp was held at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, which is just a little southeast of San Diego, and one of my old Belmont Shore teammates, Buck Martin, had a lot to do getting the Olympic Training Center to Chula Vista and making it available to USA Rugby in his capacity of Director of Recreation for the city of Chula Vista, which has seen a 26% increase in its population to over two hundred twenty thousand people since started working there in 2002.

    On the Youth front . . .
The Illinois Youth Rugby Association has news articles and keeps posting new ones all the time . . . check out their website, http://www.iyra.org/news/ for Youth information.  They also have an article on a Rugby Camp held in Springfield, IL, for 'At-Risk Youth', which was organized by James Carlberg, the head Coach of the Springfield Celts.  Another article is all about a FREE Newsletter for high school Rugby Coaches delivered by Rugby Magazine called High School Rugger . . . did I say it's FREE . . . yep.  Contact Jackie Finlan, jfi...@rugbymag.com, at Rugby Magazine to start getting your copy.

There's a new High School Rugby Club in the Bloomington-Normal, IL, area . . . the Twin City Tornados, http://www.tctrugby.com/, and the Club will be competing in the 8 Club League of Central Illinois . . . the Association still needs to get an official name.  Yep, the league has grown to 8 Clubs in a short two years.

Check, and keep checking with your local high schools on the possibilities of one or more in your area dropping football due to the expense, and states not having the money to support 'extracurricular activities', which football falls under.  USA Today had an article about it, but it didn't mention any high schools in the Midwest as far as I remember.  The financial situation will be an ongoing issue for some time to come, and if a school does drop football it only makes sense to present the possibilities of Rugby filling that void.
Keep sending in your scores . . . again, 'cause I am sending out my newsletter once a week now.  Please send me your scores by Sunday or Monday of each week if at all possible . . . after a match on Saturday would be totally awesome too, and basically shock me . . . in general sending in your scores on Tuesday or Wednesday, or later, is way too late . . . that causes my newsletter to come out late, especially when I don't get Midwest League scores right away . . . I need your help in that area . . . please HELP!!!

Cheers,
Shawn

P.S.  Don't forget to join the Google Group I've set up for the sheer convenience of getting my newsletters out in a timely fashion,
