To One and All:

It's been a crazy summer . . . very busy with everything including Rugby.  So, here we go with the fall season, which begins with League matches this weekend, and at least one Summer Venue left, i.e., the Big Ten 7s Championship, http://www.midwestrugby.org/bigten7schampionship11.htm.  I will be posting results of that Tournament as the day goes by tomorrow just like I did for the USA Rugby Men's Club 7s Championship, http://www.midwestrugby.org/usarugbyclub7schampionship2011.htm, all day long on both days.  I would like to personally send out CONGRATULATIONS to the Chicago Lions and the YoungBloodz on the great Rugby Sevens each Team played during the Tournament.  If you're not aware of it the YoungBloodz took 4th Place and the Lions took 5th Place . . . way to go guys and congratulations to the Coaches of each Team too.

I've got all the MW Fall League Schedules posted except for the Women's Division II Conference, which I'll have posted by Monday.  You can go to the Home page, www.midwestrugby.org, or go to each from here . . .
Men:

Women:
Note:  The distinction between a League and a Conference is that within each Conference there are Leagues, i.e., each Men's DIII Conference has more than one League whereas the Men's DI Conference and DII Conference only has one League in their respective Eastern League and Western League . . . hope you all understand how I define each to make it easier to follow along.
So, please send me your results/scores from now on right after a match, or by Sunday if at all possible so that I can get it all posted and out to you by each Monday.  Of course the Standings pages are done, and you can link to those pages on each of the pages listed above.  The Standings pages get the most hits during the fall due to the fact that all us Rugby Nuts want to know who's in what place as soon as possible.

The USA Rugby Territorial All Star 7s Tournament started today, Men and Women, and both Teams got through the day with one win and two loses . . . check out all the results through Rugby Magazine, http://www.rugbymag.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1583:august-2011-scores&catid=112:2011-scores&Itemid=324.

I've heard there's another Collegiate 7s Tournament going on over the Labor Day weekend at Bowling Green State University, but I don't have any details on that one . . . maybe it's just a rumor and not actually happening.

There is at least one 15s Tournament going on over the Labor Day Weekend on the 3rd of September, and that's the Southern Illinois Women's Rugby Club RUGGAPALOOZA RUGBY TOURNAMENT, http://www.facebook.com/ruggapalooza . . . check it out.

By the way, the MW is having the Summer Meeting via a phone conference call on Sunday the 28th of September . . . couldn't get a quorum for the scheduled meeting back on the 24th of July . . . too weird, and wonder how this one will go . . . just thinkin' out loud.

Okay, so I'm back doing what I've been doing for most of the past eight years, or has it been nine, and will keep you all up to date on the scores I get, and other pertinent Rugby news every week, hopefully sending out the Newsletter on Mondays.

Cheers,
Shawn

To One and All:

Well hey, I have all but one score in as far as Midwest League matches go.  Took a lot of diggin' and quite a few phone calls.  Scores are also listed below my sign-off, and through my site, www.midwestrugby.org . . . go there to look everything up from the Home page.

Congratulations to the University of Wisconsin - Madison Men's 7s Team on their winning of the very first Big Ten 7s Championship.  Not going to list all the scores in this e-mail, and so, for the results from Saturday go to http://www.midwestrugby.org/bigten7schampionship11.htm.  The guys beat Penn State 21 to 14 in the Championship match.
I still don't know anything about the 7s Tournament at Bowling Green State University this coming Saturday . . . here's hoping someone gets in touch with me IF the Tournament is a happening Venue.  I can't find anything on the USA Rugby website about the Fall Collegiate 7s Championship, but the two Tournaments I just listed are Qualifiers for the National Tournament . . . at least that's what I hear.  Nothing is very clear about it . . . stay tuned.

Two USA Rugby Coaching Clinics are going to be held in Schaumburg, IL, on the weekend of 12th and 13th of November, 2011, and they are being Hosted by the Illinois Youth Rugby Association.  The two Clinics are the usual Coaching Clinics put on by USA Rugby, i.e., Introducing Rugby and Developing Rugby Skills.  To Register for one go to http://tinyurl.com/CoachingClinic.  The Coaching Clinics are open to anyone interested in Coaching Rugby at any level.  If you're not a Certified Rugby Coach yet . . . BECOME ONE!
Also connected to the Illinois Youth Rugby Association, the 'iYRA', http://www.iyra.org/, is the need for Coaches at established High School Rugby Clubs.  If you are interested in more information on those Clubs please contact David Hall, pres...@iyra.org.  One of the major factors holding Youth Rugby back is the lack of Coaches, and especially Coaches that have been Certified through USA Rugby, which is a requirement IF you're going to coach at the High School level or below.

Last week I forgot to mention that the Collegiate Division I Men's and Women's schedules are up.  The Collegiate Men have a few new Universities, i.e., Michigan State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Nebraska, http://www.midwestrugby.org/11collegiatemend1.htm . . . check it out and especially if you're interested in catching a match or two.  On the Collegiate Women's side of Division I the new Club is the University of Notre Dame.  You may find out more about any of the Collegiate Division I Clubs by clicking on their respective links/logos to the left and right of the schedule on each page.

Just in case some of you hadn't heard the Chicago Lions have officially dropped out of the Super League and are in the MW Men's Division I Conference - Western League, and aren't in any other MW Men's Division for Club 15s Rugby.  The Chicago Griffins are still in the Super League and only playing a non-League schedule against certain Clubs in the MW Men's Division I Conference - Western and Eastern Leagues . . . I've heard it was pretty difficult for them to find matches against DI Clubs, i.e., a lot of those Clubs refused to play the Griffins . . . I always thought that if you wanted to get better you played the very best Clubs you could get on your schedule . . . if you won't schedule a match against a Super League Club when given the chance which direction is your Club going?
Speaking about Men's Division I Clubs . . . Scioto Valley has dropped the name and now is the Columbus Rugby Club . . . a new logo in on it's way to me, and their new link is already on my site under the MW Men's Division I Conference - Eastern League, as Columbus, http://columbusrugby.com/ . . . their old Scioto Valley logo is still in their new banner, but that will change shortly.

The MW had its Summer Meeting yesterday via a Conference Call, with much discussed, and five new Clubs approved.  Those are the Belleville Rowdies, http://rowdiesrugby.com/, the Columbus Rhinos, http://columbusrugby.net/default.aspx, the Springfield Celts, http://www.celtsrugby.com/, Steel Valley, no website found, and the Lindenwood University Women's Rugby Club, http://www.lindenwoodlions.com/index.aspx?path=wrugby&tab=rugby-w.  The Rowdies, Celts, and Lindenwood are members of the Illinois Rugby Union, http://www.illinoisrugby.com/.  The Columbus Rhinos Rugby Club is a member of the Indiana Rugby Union, http://indianarugby.org/, and Steel Valley is a member of the Ohio Rugby Union, http://ohiorugbyunion.org/ORU2/content.php.

Oh, our MW Men's and Women's Sevens Teams didn't fair so well at the National All Star Sevens Tournament at the Olympic Training Center, http://www.midwestrugby.org/olympictrainingcenterinformation.htm, in Chula Vista, CA.  Both took 7th Place in their respective Tournaments, which ain't great, but hey, we've played with some very young Teams, and one thing is for sure, Women's 7s needs to be promoted a ton more in the Midwest, i.e., we didn't have any MW Women's Sevens Series Qualifiers, and we didn't have one Women's  Team in the National Club/Team 7s Tournament held earlier this month, http://www.midwestrugby.org/usarugbyclub7schampionship2011.htm, for the Men's Tournament, and http://www.midwestrugby.org/usarugbywomensclub7schampionship2011.htm, for the Women's Tournament.  Come on folks promote the game, we are the biggest Territory in USA Rugby.

Don't forget about the 15s Tournament going on over the Labor Day Weekend on the 3rd of September, and that's the Southern Illinois Women's Rugby Club RUGGAPALOOZA RUGBY TOURNAMENT, http://www.facebook.com/ruggapalooza . . . check it out.

     Okay, that's about it for now . . . keep on Ruckin' and remember . . . IF YOU CAN'T PLAY DEFENSE YOU AREN'T A RUGBY PLAYER . . . wink, wink!

Cheers,
Shawn
