To One and All:
Well, here we go with weekly updates again . . .
Just to summarize the Summer 7s in
the Midwest, and at the USA Rugby level the Midwest didn't do so well . . .
congratulations go out to all the 7s Teams that made it to the Nationals, i.e.,
the Chicago Lions, the Chicago Griffins, and Milwaukee. The Lions took 3rd
place, but our two other Teams came in 13th, 14th, 15th, or 16th. USA
Rugby chose NOT to have a playoff for the last four places, like they have had
in previous years, and it looks like they left those seeds up to arbitrary
decisions for next year, which probably means the Midwest will lose a seed since
we entered the Tournament with a 16th seed. It almost looks like a setup,
but who knows, and we'll have to wait and see since it wasn't played out as I
think it should have been.
The Midwest Men's 7s All Star Team
took the Bowl Championship . . . congratulations on that. The Midwest
entered as the 4th seed, and since the Bowl competition is for the bottom four
Teams we'll probably lose a seed there and be entered as the 5th seed next
year. On the Women's 7s All Star Team the Midwest entered the Tournament
as the number one seed, but didn't win a match in their Pool, and only won one
match the whole day. The Midwest will probably drop down to the 6th seed
next year. Hopefully we'll do better next year on both fronts and climb
back to higher seeds in the years to come. Congratulations to all the Men
and Women All Star Players that made the commitment to be part of the Midwest 7s
All Star programs.
In the meantime our Men's
Thunderbirds got whacked by the Ontario Blues 38 to 5 after 34 men from around
the Midwest showed up in Elkhart, IN, for a 3 day camp, which, in the end,
produced a 22 man roster to play against the Blues . . . here's the link to see
the 22 man roster http://www.midwestrugby.org/09menstbirdsvsoblues.htm.
The only problem I have with the way things were done is the fact that 12 other
guys, who paid their way to get there didn't get to play in the match or even as
a Team in the 10s Tournament that went on the same day . . . just my own input,
and it has nothing to do with Midwest policy.
My site has been updated for the past
two weeks . . . on the Men's side of the game you've got updates on Midwest
League play with the Division I Eastern Conference, the Western Conference, and
the Standings . . . all the links are below. You've also got the same with
Division III Eastern Conference, the Western Conference, and the Standings . . .
League play has been going on. The Midwest Division II League Schedule is
up, but play hasn't started . . . yet. The same applies to the Women's
Division I League Schedule, and the Division II League
Schedule, but two Midwest Clubs, the have started in the Women's Premier
League . . . that link, with results is listed below.
There were two 15s Tournament
that took place this past weekend in the Midwest that I know of . . . one is the
St. Paul Jazz Pigs 'Jesse James' Tournament, which the Eastside Banshees won,
and the other was the Southern Illinois University Women's Ruggapalooza, which
had different Divisions, i.e., the St. Louis Royals won the Men's Division,
Indiana University won the Collegiate Men's Division, and right now I don't know
who won the Women's Division or the Collegiate Women's Division, but I will have
results sooner than later and some of the results
are already listed on the Illinois Rugby Union website, which is
listed below.
Hey, congratulations go out to the Midwest players that made
the 'new' American Rugby Championship, which has four Teams from Canada, one
Team from Argentina, and one Team from the USA. The Canadian Teams are
already playing a round robin of three matches each, and then a playoff between
the top two, and then the winning Team will play the winner of the
Argentina versus USA match, and the loser will play the loser of the Argentina
versus USA match. So. Canadian Teams are playing no less than three
matches, and then the top two of the four Teams will play no less than five
matches . . . I wonder if the USA Team will actually be prepared, and I wonder
if the North American 4 platform wasn't a better way for the Eagles Coach, Eddie
O'Sullivan, to find more and better Eagles . . . does make one wonder doesn't
it! The American Rugby Championship has its own website, http://www.americasrugbychampionship.com/ .
. . check it out, and bookmark it to keep up to date on all the news. Our
Midwest players that got selected are . . . in the Pack: Nate Ellis
(Chicago Lions), and Mate Moeakiola (Pearl City) . . . in the Backline:
Tai Enosa, Roland Suniula, and Shalom Suniula (all from Pearl
City).
Start sending in your scores . . . again, 'cause I will be
sending out my newsletter once a week this fall.
Cheers,
Shawn
