To One and All:
I think .
. . yep, that all of the Midwest League matches are posted, and the
Standings . . . more LAU matches are listed below along
with many LAU League Championship Playoff matches . .
.
On the Women's front . .
.
The brackets are up for the Women's Division II Championship
with the opening rounds listed and scores posted, http://www.midwestrugby.org/09womensd2championship.htm .
. . the Final 4 is this coming weekend in Pittsburgh, PA. The first and
second place Clubs will then move on to Houston, TX, for the National
Championship, which is a USA Rugby venue on the 7th and 8th of November.
Right now there are ten seeds listed, but the brackets of who plays
who haven't been determined . . . yet.
In Division I the Midwest has two Clubs playing this coming
weekend for the USA Rugby National Championship in Acton, MA, at NARA
Park. Chicago North Shore enters the Championship Tournament as the
Midwest #1 seed, the Competitive Region 2 (CR2) #3 seed, and the National
#9 seed. Chicago North Shore opens with the National #8 seed Boston, the
CR3 #4 seed. The Detroit RFC enters the Tournament as the Midwest #2
seed, the CR2 #4 seed, and the National #11 seed. Detroit opens with the
National #6 seed Philadelphia, the CR3 #3. The National Tournament
starts out with a Round of 16, but there are only 12 Clubs entered with
numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds getting byes in the first round, and entering the
Round of 8 fresh due to a lack of competition . . . wonder how much the
Premier League cut into having a full 16 Clubs entered in the National
Division I Championship Tournament . . . jeez, it's hard to believe
the Women's game doesn't have enough DI Clubs to fill a Round of 16 for a
National Championship. Anyway, good luck to Chicago North Shore and the
Detroit RFC. To see the brackets go to http://web.usarugby.org/cgi-bin/viadesto/championships/show.pl?competitionId=204,
and to get all the information on the Tournament, including match times,
directions, and lodging information go to http://www.usarugby.org/media/EDocs/2009_Womens_NCS_Playoffs.pdf.
On
the Youth front . . .
Don't forget to have your son, or your high school
players close enough to Naperville indoor facility to take part in
learning all about Touch Rugby on Sunday the 15th of November, and for
five more consecutive Sundays, the 22nd and 29th of November, and
the 13th, 20th and 27th of December (6 weeks total).
Coaches from the Illinois Youth Rugby Association will teach the basics of
Rugby running, passing, beating your opponent, and the onside/offside rules.
Touch Rugby is a fun, fast, and exciting way to learn the game . .
. those clinics in Touch Rugby are for Boys from the 8th
grade to high school seniors, and from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM . .
. program fee is $120.00. To Register go to https://www.playersindoor.com/registration.cfm?register=361,
and for more information contact Graeme Jackson, nzgr...@yahoo.com.
Now that Rugby Sevens is an Olympic
Sport start checking out, again, where high schools are in regards to possibly
taking Rugby on as a sport at that level. You know we're a Olympic
crazed nation and athletes will be coming from all sport disciplines to see if
they can't become an Olympian and gather some of the gold that's handed out,
and they will doing it with the graces of their families, friends, and
fans. They will also be in the hunt for a position on the squad with or
without pay. It's like our great skiers who go out and get their own
sponsors to pay for the year 'round training it takes to be in the top ten of
American skiers. Imagine the financial support some will get when they
send a fundraising letter to their extended family, friends of their parents,
and other friends and/or groups they know, and the letter won't be for
cleaning up a section of a highway, or a lift-a-thon, or anything like that .
. . it will be to stay in training all year around to make the Olympic Rugby
Sevens squad. Which of us never thought about being in the Olympics as a
young kid, and staying glued to the TV watching everything having to do with
the Olympics. Kids will be looking for avenues to attain their
goal. They will be putting pressure on high schools, junior high
schools, oops, those are called middle schools now aren't they, and elementary
schools to have some kind of program that teaches them all about
Rugby and let's them play the game. Re-introduce yourself to the high
school administrators, all the coaches, and let them know where you can be
reached when the school decides it's time for the school to have a Rugby
program that is sponsored through the school . . . they will also need Coaches
that will be paid, and Referees that will be certified for free by the
school, and/or the state organizations!!! It may be only 7s that a
school takes on, but one thing leads to another, and many of those players
will want to play 15s . . . ah, what a GREAT time to be involved in Rugby in
the United States of America . . . and being a military brat from way back .
. Go Army!
Coach Wanted . . .
Haven't heard from any of the Clubs that need a coach, and
so, take a look at all three Clubs http://www.midwestrugby.org/wanted.htm,
and if you're not interested pass the information on to someone you know
looking to coach a Collegiate Club or a Senior Women's
Club.
Super League . . .
The Belmont Shore Rugby
Club won't be in the Super League this coming spring! Since I'm one of
the original 7 founding members I know what prompted the move, which has a lot
to do with the finances, and the fact that the Super League isn't going in the
direction it set out in the beginning, i.e., the Super League has been going
for at least ten years now, with the original 8 Clubs and the
administration wanting the Super League to be a pro or semi-pro league by
now. When USA Rugby got involved things changed drastically, and even to
the point where Keith Engelbrecht resigned recently as the President of
the Super League . . . he is one of the founding members. Belmont Shore
made it clear there wasn't enough value in the League to validate the budget
it takes to be a part of the League, and the Club, as a whole, thinks they
will be better off competing in the Southern California Division I, which they
have been doing all along, and now will have a stronger Division I Club.
OMBAC has a Division I Team, a Division III Team, and a Super League Team . .
. they may drop out also if the Club goes along with a few of the
administrative leaders and some of the Old Mission Athletic Club members,
golfers rather than Rugby players, who have been major financial
contributors . . . stay tuned on that. Belmont Shore's budget was
over a hundred thousand dollars, exact figures won't be mentioned, and by not
being in the Super League the budget will be about half of what it
was.
Please keep sending me information to pass
on to my little list of over twenty-one hundred e-mail addresses that
some say reach at least five thousand members of the Midwest Rugby
Territory. Keep sending me scores as soon as possible after your match . .
. please do that in the name of promoting Rugby . . . your own game . . .
THANKS goes out to everyone that keeps on Ruckin'!
Cheers,
Shawn
