To One and All:

Well, here I am putting this together on Friday after changing some results and standings at least four times due to mis-information from original sources that didn't come from a Referee, and once I got a Referee's result it usually wasn't the same as the other sources . . . I've also had a bunch of things to do related to work, which is always good 'cause it means more money for my 'wife for life' and I.  There you go, and the problems I've been having with getting the 'correct' result is what makes me keep asking for Referees to send me the results of a match or matches they refereed.  So, here we go and enjoy . . .

It's almost playoff time for Men's Division I, II, and III.  I'll have most of everything concerning those over the weekend, or by Monday night on my website . . . for the different Division links scroll down to the results under last weekend's date below.  This weekend is the last weekend before the playoffs start, and several Clubs are still in the hunt for a playoff berth . . . the competition is getting better, with more parity in many Leagues and/or Conferences.  The Women in Division I and II have already started . . . take a look by clicking on the links below.  The Men's and Women's Collegiate Division II Clubs will be starting on the weekend of October 30th and 31st, and all that information will be up also.  Playoff time is GREAT, and a lot of work too.  With that said, a big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to the Chicago North Shore Women and the Chicago Women to play in the Round of 12 in Austin, TX on the 30th and 31st of October . . . the link to the National Championship is below under Women's Division I.  Chicago North Shore finished in 1st place and the Chicago Women took 2nd place in the Competitive Region 2 (CR2) Championship Playoff this past weekend.  In the Women's Division II their playoff got started this past weekend, and the results are below along with the links to their competition.

There are at least three articles on Rugby Magazine's website this week . . . check them out . . .

          1. The University of Minnesota's exposure to the game through branding to the point where the Club charges a fee to get into the TCF Bank Stadium . . . and . . . they're making money, http://www.rugbymag.com/features/profiles/gophers-growing-exposure-game.aspx.

          2. Pretty good article about Metropolis being the host of the MW Division I Playoff, and sittin' in 4th Place, 1 behind the Harlequins, and the urgency all the players feel on moving up to 3rd Place so that they will be in the playoff picture, http://www.rugbymag.com/news/clubs/mensclubs/metropolis-clinging-to-playoff-hopes.aspx.

          3. There's an article on Davenport University and Miami of Ohio University and how their respective players are finding out that the adjustment to Collegiate Men's Division I are a bit tougher than some of them thought . . . good article to use if you're coaching Collegiate Rugby and want to know what players think, http://www.rugbymag.com/news/colleges/collegemen/di-life-adjustment-for-davenport-miami.aspx.

The Men's Eagle Team lost to Canada by the score of 17 to 6, and Canada scored once while the Eagles were down to 14 players . . . if you'd want to read all about that match, and others, including a press release on the next match against the Saracens on the 9th of November in a very special place to play Rugby, in the heart of London, the Honourable Artillery Company's Garden, which is in the oldest regiment in the British Army . . . get there if you can.  To read all about it, and a lot more if you go to http://www.rugbymag.com/news/national-teams/men.aspx.

Bob Figueiredo has found a rehab place in Syracuse and he will be back at by today if not sooner. He will be doing out patient physical therapy. His spirits are up and he can walk a little.  He still has some problems with his right arm.  No one knows when he'll be able to get back to work so there's going to be a fundraiser for Bob tomorrow, Saturday the 23rd of October starting at 5:00 PM at O'Callaghan's Pub, 470 Monroe Ave, Rochester, NY 14607.  There will be food and drinks, and door prizes.  They will be taking donations at the door too.  People will be able to buy raffle tickets for door prizes, and tickets for a 50/50.   Jim Tobin is not asking anyone for donations but if you want to send a check you can write it out to Rochester Aardvarks and mail it to Howard Lockhart , 5854 State Route 96 -  Apartment 238A, Romulus, NY 14541.  Howard is the Aardvarks Treasurer . . . everything goes to Bob, the cost of the fundraiser is minimal and none of the money received will be used for the fundraiser.  A Facebook page has been created "Praying for Bob's full recovery", but I can't find it, and so, I don't have a link.  Get in touch with Jim Tobin, jim_to...@yahoo.com for more information.

There's also a fundraiser for the Vincent Clarkson Memorial Fund.  Vincent Clarkson had played Rugby for the Illinois Youth Select Side, the Tornados.  Vincent died of natural causes at the young age of 21.  This Saturday, tomorrow, October 23rd, 2010, Vincent's parents will be celebrating what would have been Vincent's 22nd birthday by hosting the first annual Vincent Clarkson Memorial event to raise funds for the Illinois Youth Rugby Association, a non-profit organization and public charity. The fundraiser will be held at The Claddagh Irish Pub at Geneva Commons on Randall Road in Geneva from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.  The Claddagh has offered to donate 10% of all food receipts for the evening. There will be live music, raffle, and silent auction for some great prizes from local hotels, restaurants, and entertainment events. Come out to join us for a good cause...and have a great time.  If you would like to donate an item to the silent auction then please call Joe Clarkson 630-640-4787.

Think I may need to put the above two paragraphs on the Fundraiser page, especially when we're talkin' 'bout money for injured players, and/or those that have moved on to that ultimate Rugby pitch in heaven and have a Memorial Fund going.

I don't think I'm missin' any MW venue results, and please keep sending me your scores/results as soon as possible . . . I love the fact that most of you keep sending me results, and especially the Referees that send me the results along with the number of Trys that have been scored 'cause if a Club scores at least 4 Trys it gets a Bonus Point.

Good luck to everyone this weekend . . . there's going to be great Rugby going on all over the Midwest . . . enjoy . . .

Cheers,
Shawn

To One and All:

It's the 26th of August and we've already got assigned League matches that were played yesterday . . . jeez that seems early to me, but hey, I'm just an old man who's only been involved with Rugby since the winter of '69/'70 . . . not at all like football, which I've enjoyed since I was 5 years old as a QB . . . now we need American Rugby flyhalfs and fullbacks that start that early so the good ol' USA can have the likes of a Dan Carter and/or a Jonny Wilkinson at fly, and a JPR Williams, and/or a Christian Cullen at fullback . . . that would help dramatically in future World Cubs.

The MW 7s season ended a short two weeks ago with the Men's and Women's All Star Teams.  The MW Thunderbirds All Star 7s Teams finished higher this year than last, and higher than they have in past few years . . . the Men's Thunderbirds All star Team took 4th place, and Women's Thunderbirds All Star Team came in 5th place, http://www.midwestrugby.org/usarugbyallstar7schampionships2012.htm.  The Men's Thunderbirds All Star 7s Team roster can be viewed here, http://www.midwestrugby.org/12mensthunderbirds7s.htm, and the Women's Thunderbirds All Star 7s Team Roster can be viewed here, http://www.midwestrugby.org/12mensthunderbirds7s.htm . . . both Roster links include the Staff of each Team.
Two weeks before that the USA Rugby National Club 7s Championship Tournament took place.  On the Men's side of the National picture congratulations to the Chicago Lions 7s Team, which came in 2nd place in the USA Rugby National Club 7s Championship, and congratulations to the YoungBloodz 7s Team, which came in 6th place, http://www.midwestrugby.org/usarugbymensclub7schampionship2012.htm.  On the Women's side of the National picture congratulations to the YoungBloodz 7s Team, which came in 3rd place, and to the Chicago North Shore 7s Team, which came in 8th place in the USA Rugby National Club 7s Championship, http://www.midwestrugby.org/usarugbywomensclub7schampionship2012.htm.  There's also a great article by the YoungBloodz Women's 7s Team member Katie Johnson on the Rugby Magazine's website, http://www.rugbymag.com/rugbymag-premier/profiles-a-interviews-2/5456-kj-speaks-to-youngbloodz-success.html.  By the way, if you didn't notice, the Chicago Lions Men's 7s Team took 1st place in the Midwest, and the YoungBloodz 7s Team came in 2nd.  The Chicago North Shore Women's 7s Team took 1st place in the Midwest and the YoungBloodz 7s Team came in 2nd.

I'm missing a few scores in the Men's Division II Conference . . . I've got most listed below along with the links to the Eastern League and Western League.  I'll have the rest of the Senior Men's and Women's Conferences schedules posted before the end of this week, and I'll have as many results as I can possibly have.  As most of you know I haven't sent out a newsletter for about a year, actually August 29th, 2011, and I'm doing my newsletter again 'cause there has been a terrible lack of communication within the MW.  My apologies to all of you, and especially to those that kept writing me and asking me to keep sending my newsletter out . . . and thank you too!  I'll have the Women's Division I schedule and results posted within a day or so, and the one Men's Division III League that started, the Northern League, schedule and results posted within a day or so also.

If you are a Referee please send me your results, and to make things even better for quite a few of you I've got a cell phone for you to text me scores right after a match, 618-780-0589 . . . put that number in your phone, and let's see if I can get a bunch of scores on Saturday rather than waiting until Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday, and in some cases until Wednesday or Thursday.  The texting will also work for anyone else that has the CORRECT score and which Club scored at least 4 Trys . . . the 4 Trys thing is important when it comes to the Standings in each Conference.

I've been pulling my hair out all summer dealing with the 'new' USA Rugby Collegiate program, which I don't agree with, but have had to go along with due to the fact that there's no other way to go right now if you want to see deserving Collegiate Clubs advance to the National Championship Tournament.  Some Clubs and Administrators haven't joined in the new program, and still haven't joined or created a Conference for them to be on the path to USA Rugby's National Collegiate Club Championship this fall . . . wow!

Pass this newsletter around to all your contacts, and especially to those that may not be on my list and have them send me an e-mail requesting that I add them . . . I'm sure my contact number will be down from over the 2200 e-mail addresses I had last year.  As we all know people make changes and making an e-mail address change isn't that difficult, and required in some cases.

One other thing . . . the USA Rugby Eagles Men's 7s Team took 2nd place in the North American and Caribbean Rugby Association, the NACRA, play-in Tournament to the next iRB World Cup next June in Moscow, Russia.  Canada beat them 26 to 19.  Read all about the Eagles, Men's and Women's Teams, on the Rugby Magazine's website, www.rugbymag.com . . .

Good luck to everyone this fall . . . there's going to be great Rugby going on all over the Midwest . . . enjoy . . .

Cheers,
Shawn

P.S.  Please keep sending me all your results, especially if you're a Referee . . . text me at 618-780-0589 if you find it easier and faster.  Join the Google Group I've set up for the sheer convenience of getting my newsletters out in a timely fashion, http://groups.google.com/group/MTRNews/about?hl=en
