To One and All:
Well, here we go again with the
Midwest Fall Rugby Season . . . good luck to everyone. All the current
scores are below . . . enjoy . . .
I apologize for not getting a
newsletter out since last November, but when my clients need attention I take
care of business first. I hope all of you haven't missed my newsletters
too much, and have been going to my site for updated information about Rugby in
the Midwest.
You may not have noticed a Rugby
Coaching Clinic held by the Illinois Youth Rugby Association this past winter
that was a bit different than the normal USA Rugby Coaching Certification
Program. I'm mentioning it 'cause I feel that the Clinic they put on is a
great way to go with Coaches going over a topic, and then taking any question
others wanted to ask. It's more like my old QB days when I use to attend,
during high school, clinics put on by some of the great Collegiate Football
Coaches of the day like Darrell Royal of the University of Texas and John McKay
of the University of Southern California. They put on a few Clinics where
they went over their entire practice schedule, pre-game regime, and game day
Coaching philosophy. People would ask them if it would hurt them to let
their competition know what they were doing, and both would chuckle and tell
everyone that they wanted more parity among Collegiate Football Teams, and that
it didn't matter if a Coach went about his practices and/or game day regime
EXACTLY like their programs because that wouldn't win or lose a game. They
both hoped that Coaches would use their methods to help them bring their
respective programs up a level or two. They also said that you win or lose
a game on how you handle the talent you have, i.e., if you have a QB that can't
hit a guy doing a skinny post 40 yards down the field nine out of ten times, and
hit other receivers with an accuracy of over 60%, you may NOT want to run a four
yards and a cloud of dust offense, and especially if you don't have the talent
to do that with wins all the time. Another words run your program to
the best ability of your talent . . . don't attempt to change the athletic
talent you have to a system that doesn't use that talent. I wish I could
have been there to take part in the Clinic, if for no other reason than to get
feedback from questions I would have asked. I think their type of Clinic
goes way beyond USA Rugby's Certification Program by giving the Coaches a look
at how great programs run their programs, and i think we need more Clinics like
the one the IYRA ran last winter. Their Clinic wasn't one that got anyone
Certified, but boy, I'll bet a lot of Coaches came away with knowledge and
applications that they wouldn't get any other way. How do you think
football became so popular over the years!
I'm still working on 'Club Totals' on
my site, http://www.midwestrugby.org/unioninformation.htm,
and then scroll down to where 'Club Totals' appear . . . click on any LAU and/or
Youth Organization you'd care to and take a look at all the Clubs listed, and in
quite a few cases you'll notice that a Club has more than one Team entered in a
Competitive League. USA Rugby doesn't breakdown the CIPP database the way
I've broken it down, which means there are several more Teams playing the
game. What does that add up to? Well, I'm hoping you see the need to
get more individuals to become Referees, because, as with most of the country,
the Midwest has a shortage of 'active' Referees, i.e., the Midwest has a bunch
of Certified Referees, but not enough of those are actively engaging themselves
as a Referee on any given weekend. The Midwest needs more 'active'
Referees, and that's not just the job/effort of a Referee Society . . . every
member of the Midwest needs to get involved recruiting individuals to become
active Referees . . . we need to recruit individuals three hundred sixty-five
days a year, just like we recruit players. I think I'll have all the pages
done this week, and I'll have a Midwest Club Totals page done also. I'll
be putting contact information under each Club as I get the chance, which will
give all of us a simple way to get in touch with other Clubs . . . I was going
to do that a few years back, but that was when I was still getting paid by the
Midwest as your Promotional Director, and was told by the Midwest administrators
that was the job of LAUs . . . well, I still think a central location is better
than going to each LAU site in the hopes of getting that kind of information,
and the CIPP data base takes way too many clicks to get that information if it
is available. I haven't had a problem finding the information I've been
looking for except with a few organizations, and so, I'll continue with what I'm
doing and hope that most of you think it's a good thing. I started putting
it all together for the Midwest Referee Society, and have expanded it for our
entire membership . . . enjoy . . .
I'm hoping that most of you are aware
of what's been going on with what I call our Rugby Community Membership versus
USA Rugby's Executive Board. Since the Board hasn't published its own
minutes, and/or a budget, many have been calling for the entire Rugby Community
Membership to NOT pay their individual and Club dues to USA Rugby as a protest .
. . it's a little late for that, and about the only thing we can do right now is
to let your Congress Members know that you/we don't think Rugby in the states is
going in the right direction. If you're not aware of all of that start by
going to Rugby Mag and reading Ed Hagert's article, http://www.rugbymag.com/magazine/current-issue/view-from-the-sidelines-failure-of-leadership.aspx.
You may also want to go to Gainline, http://www.gainline.us/gainline/2010/08/ed-hagerty-speaks-out.html,
to see all the comments about the article, which most are in favor of what Ed's
article talks about, and then there's a very long article done on Kevin Roberts
and the way he's handled himself AFTER becoming the CEO of Saatchi &
Saatchi, http://www.gainline.us/gainline/2010/08/ed-hagerty-speaks-out.html .
. . you'll get a huge insight into the way KR thinks, and how he goes about
moving people out IF they don't agree with him, http://nymag.com/nymetro/news/media/features/12022/ .
. . you'll probably want to print it out, and read it at your
leisure.
Whew, with all that said let's get to
the results from this past weekend. A huge THANKS goes out to all of
you that sent me your results, and that includes a bunch of Referees . . .
yeah!
Cheers,
Shawn
