To One and All:

Midwest League matches are complete, and posted on my website, www.midwestrugby.org . . . I apologize for getting this out so late in the week, but when you don't get some Midwest League match results until Thursday, and I've still got a career that requires more and more of my time, it's tough to stay focused on the newsletter . . . so, with that being said . . . better late than never, right . . . right . . . enjoy . . .

     Coach Wanted . . .
The three Clubs I mentioned last week looking for a Coach are still looking . . . to see more, and to contact one, or both go to http://www.midwestrugby.org/wanted.htm.
     On the Women's front . . .
There's a new website that is covering the Women's International game for both 15s and 7s, http://www.scrumqueens.com/ . . . take a look . . . enjoy . . .

The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Women's Coach, Scot Prunckle, sent out a Press Release on his Club's match against the Eastern Illinois University Women's Club, http://www.midwestrugby.org/09uwmpressrelease.htm.
     The iRB . . .
There's a three page summary of the 2009 iRB Law Rulings up, and if you haven't read it please do so as soon as possible to keep up to date on the game, http://www.midwestrugby.org/09irblawrulingsummary.htm.

The Olympic Campaign:  Keep on supporting this as much as you can, http://www.midwestrugby.org/09irbolympiccampaign.htm . . . get Rugby back into the Olympics . . . ONLY NINE DAYS LEFT FOR YOU TO ACT.  THE DECISION WILL BE MADE ON THE 9th OF OCTOBER!
     USA Rugby . . .
If you haven't seen it yet you may want to take a look at the USA Rugby Financial Report on eRugby News, http://www.erugbynews.com/article.php?sec=3172&a=5555 . . . wonder when USA Rugby will be asking us for more money to fund the Eagles, the administration staff, and other things . . . a net deficit of over seven hundred thousand dollars . . . wow!

The squad being selected for the Americas Rugby Championship has gone through a few changes by having certain players already selected dropping out, and for a good reason in most cases, i.e., four Pearl City players have dropped out do to the fact that Pearl City is at the top of the Midwest Division I Western League and moving toward another run at the USA Rugby Division I Championship.  If the four players were to stick with the USA Rugby squad they would be gone more than a week since  . . . which Rugby Club anywhere would be on top of their game missing four starters . . . um, none is my answer to that.  Mark Roberts (Chicago Lions) is in the pool of 33 players that will be reduced to 23 before the squad travels to Toronto . . . Mark is a member of the Lions Super League Club, which doesn't play in the fall, and so, I do wish him well, and hope that he makes the final cut so that we will have at least one player representing the Midwest.  Nate Ellis (Chicago Lions) is another player originally selected that wasn't able to commit the time necessary to be a part of the new ARC format.  We're still an amateur Rugby Nation, and until we go pro we will always have some our best players unavailable to play for the Eagles.  I do wish USA Rugby would get on board with the professional approach in naming squads, i.e., give the players name, Club affiliation, main position, and even height and weight . . . maybe their hometown also, and the school they went to if we're talkin' 'bout a Senior Side..  It's like how do you know who's playing where if you don't know what position a player plays . . . that would be like getting a NFL program without any player positions listed . . . like da, would you know who the QB is/was if the program only listed names?  The last news I got about the squad being put together is being called the USA Selects, and opens against the Argentina Jaguars on the 10th of October, and win or lose it plays again on the 17th of October.  Matches will be available through http://www.ustream.tv/channel/usa-rugby, and for more information on the Americas Rugby Championship, visit www.americasrugbychampionship.com.
If you don't get the USA Rugby Coach Development newsletter, Bill LeClerc, the USA Rugby National Team Scrum Coach, will be holding open scrum sessions this coming Monday, the 5th of October, and Tuesday, the 6th of October from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM and from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM at Glendale's turf filed, which is across from the Infinity Park Stadium . . . that's in Glendale, Colorado.  The sessions will conclude with a question and answer session with Coach LeClerc . . . a DVD of all the sessions will be given out, and I hope USA Rugby makes that available to all of us that can't make it since the notice I got is from yesterday, which is a little late to jump on a plane and be there for most of us.  If you do have the time and money you'll need to be there by 9:00 AM Monday, and pay $30.00 to USA Rugby CDP.  Completion of all four sessions will give you five Continuing Education Units, www.usarugby.org/goto/ceu, in USA Rugby's CDP.  Contact Mollie McCarthy, mmca...@usarugby.org, for more information.  If you ever have the chance to make a clinic where Coach LeClerc is involved do so, 'cause he is on the cutting edge of forward play.  I was lucky enough to go to a clinic in St. Louis where he was the featured instructor, and yes, I did get a lot out of it.
     On the Youth front . . .
I've been told that High School Rugger isn't available anymore from Rugby Magazine . . . wonder what happened there.
     On the International front . . .
The University of Wisconsin - Stout Rugby Alumnus Aaron Fry (Madison East High School), now playing Rugby for The High School Old Boys in New Zealand, was voted at the Most Improved player for their Division I Team this past season.  The Old Boys Club, http://www.oldboys.co.nz, is one of the oldest in the world dating back to 1900, with many former All Blacks, such as Dan Carter, Andrew Mehrtens, and Justin Marshall as former players.  The Club fields 7 competitive sides with Aaron capturing the most improved honor at the highest level.
Congratulations to Aaron on his efforts, and the honor!
eRugby News, owned by American International Media, which also owns Rugby Magazine, has a new website, http://www.rugbymag.com/ . . . eRugbyNews will still be up for another week or so, and then be sending everyone to the new site automatically.  I've also heard, rumor only at this time, that the new site is free . . . they are actually making money from sponsors . . .

Keep sending me scores as soon as possible after your match . . . please do that in the name of promoting Rugby . . . your own game.

I would like to thank all the Referees that sent in their results on Saturday and Sunday . . . even got one score from a New York State Referee . . . I hope we continue to make progress on that front.

Cheers,
Shawn
