To One and All:

Getting this out very late this week, Thursday . . . not enough results received in a timely fashion . . . wonder if I'll see Rugby in the news almost everyday in the states before I move on . . . back to being a paid QB coach . . . fooled ya didn't I . . . if you didn't get it, that was a joke!

Congratulations to the Chicago North Shore Women's Rugby Club for winning it all, and being Champions of the Midwest Women's Division I. To see those results go to http://www.midwestrugby.org/10womensdivision1conference.htm. The Club will be hosting the Competitive Region 2 in Chicago the weekend of October 16th and 17th. More information on that will be available in next week's newsletter. Oh, by the way, the Chicago Women took 2nd place and will be in the CR2 playoff also.

Let's move on with RECRUITING REFEREES . . . once again! We need more Referees plain and simple . . . recruit them like you recruit players, i.e., 365 days a year. Find the guys on your Club that may never be an 'A' side player, or a guy that may be close to ending his high level play, and has a passion for the game that will always keep him coming out . . . talk to those guys about becoming a Referee, and getting paid every time they referee a match . . . encourage them to pick up a whistle! Rugby players usually make better Rugby Referees than a guy that's never played the game before. I've heard that some of you think it's the Referee Society's job to recruit . . . get serious . . . most of our Referees come from playing the game, and our Clubs are responsible for making sure the game continues, continues to progress, and to developed the game . . . that includes making sure we have enough Referees to do all the matches as Rugby gets bigger and better all the time. Let it sink in . . . we are responsible for our game, you and I, and it's up to us to find and/or be the administrators that can handle the responsibilities of the game as it grows . . . we can't shirk our responsibilities off on others, and/or to other organizations . . . we've got to do it . . . make it happen . . . we need Referees, Referee Coaches, and Referee Evaluators . . . otherwise our game will die.

Hey, did you catch the latest with Rugby at Cal Berkeley? The program has been moved from being under the Varsity umbrella back to being a Club Sport. It's all about Title IX, 'cause the Rugby program was giving somewhere around three hundred thousand to the school . . . yep, you heard right, the Rugby program was giving three hundred thousand to the school due to its financial where-with-all, i.e., an endowment of more than three million, and alumni donations of a quarter of a million dollars, or so, year in and year out. Cal also dropped four other Men's programs, which includes the coaching staff of those programs . . . baseball is one of the programs . . . yikes, they dropped baseball. The Rugby program isn't going to change much at all, except that they may not have the Varsity status to use Trainers, and the use of the facilities the NCAA programs use . . . I don't think a decision has been made on many of those internal issues. Jack is fighting to keep Rugby under the Varsity umbrella, but who knows. Liz Entwhistle is doing much better thanks to many of you who have been supporting her. For everyone involved with Rugby there's a great video about a high school program, Oklahoma City Canton Tigers, that uses Rugby as a way to stay in shape, and also improve on their skill level in general. Check it out, and I think you'll want to show it to any coach that isn't coaching Rugby, http://www.okblitz.com/Article.aspx?id=25029 . . . this says a lot for our game of Rugby in the states . . . use it.

The IYRA Coaches Association will be meeting on Saturday the 30th of October to present a Positive Coaching Alliance Workshop.
