Sorry to hear this, Melissa. Part of me is really pissed off & the other part feels pretty helpless. But, I am definitely inspired to only use my cell phone, while driving, when absolutely necessary...i.o.w. never.  Tell us how I can help your friend, Grant?

Hey guys... not sure if anyone saw this, but I didn't see it mentioned. Grant is a friend of mine and on Thursday, while riding his bike in the bike lane in Sorrento Valley, he was crushed by a motorist who ran him over from behind. His injuries were very severe and we are being told he will never walk again. He is currently in ICU but stable.

He isn't a member of the tri club, but he is a member of a community we are all part of... people who cycle on San Diego's roads. I wish there were something we could do to make riding in San Diego safer. I'm not sure what could have helped a guy who was appropriately riding in the bike lane minding his own business when he was rear-ended out of the blue and crushed by a Toyota Camry whose driver, by one account, may have been on the cell phone.

I think it is important that anytime there is an accident like this in our community, everyone be made aware. I feel that perhaps San Diego needs some sort of campaign of awareness, share the road or some other such campaign to remind motorists that they hold people's fragile lives in their hands.

My friend Grant has a long road ahead of him and several months in the hospital, at least. At any rate, people, please be careful out there and please keep him in your prayers and well-wishes.
