It’s not just Sycamore, I just got this message from a friend:

Stay off the ridgelines near Miramar/spring/oak/etc on the weekends. After riding the place for 6+ years, I got stopped by military and federal police this morning out there.

My friend’s response:

No, they didn't fine me, just a verbal warning.
Initially they asked for ID, I BS'ed with the guy for a while and talked to him about the property boundaries and he let me leave.
They are enforcing areas which really are not Miramar property, however, they claimed all land between the 52 and Santee lakes is theirs, it is not.

I like to ride there, as well, so let's try and figure out whom to contact before the military guys get their way simply because no one stands up to them.
Who does the land belong to? City of SD? Santee? Is it part of Mission Gorge Trail park? Etc.
Once we know--or think we know--I am willing to contact the appropriate agency/city to clarify ownership and access.

Its not about their land, they have a shooting range out there, (we've all seen it) its about liability.   They're shooting 50cal rounds and a stray round will travel far but that's when they're training plus you can't mistake the sound of that size of round....

The land is owned by the Navy.  Cnty. Supervisor Diane Jacob is aware of it.  If you want more information, contact her office.  Also SDMBA is well aware of the issues and you can contact Gardner Grady the president.  I hope your are a member of SDMBA, they fight for our trials.  Regards,  Annette and Steve Johnston

Hi Bea,
My group was stopped one day too.  We were out in Sycamore.  Although these guys identified themselves as military police, they did not have ID and were not dressed in military uniform.  Infact, they looked like anything but military police.  A friend snapped a photo and we showed it to friends in the military.  Every one's consensus was that they were private security patrol, not military.  It frustrates me, if this is true, that they would falsely identify themselves.
Has anyone run into this same issue?  Has anyone experienced anything but a warning, i.e. received an escort out, ticket, etc?  Not sure what to believe or where this  thing will lead.  But its a bummer that they are discouraging us from enjoying such a beautiful spot.

Fox 5 News is doing a story on the Marine crackdown in Sycamore Canyon today. We'd like to talk to anyone who was actually stopped while riding up Sycamore, Oak or Spring canyons. If you're willing to go on camera, please contact John Langeler (jlan...@tribune.com). He's planning to report from the trailhead at Medina Drive at 5 and 6 p.m. We hope there will be some bikers there this afternoon for him to interview live about why access to Sycamore Canyon is important to them.
