Let’s try to beat the heat (a little) by meeting at 8:30am for the Soapstone loop. Ride time on this is around 4 hrs. It’s going to be fairly hot even at Altitude so I recommend Ice in your CamelBack filled with “COLD” water!!!

Directions

Meet at the East Mesa Fire Road turn out on Hwy 79.  Take Interstate 8 east several miles past Alpine.  Take the Japatul Valley Road exit and turn left (north).  In 2.8 miles turn left on Hwy 79.  Drive 3.8 miles and park in the turn out on the right (it is about .08 mile past the 10000 Trails campground).  If you get to the Green Valley Campground you have gone a couple of miles
too far.

I think you need an Adventure pass to park. Bring any extra’s you have (I have 1 spare)

See you there!!!

You do NOT need an Adventure Pass for this. It's in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. The passes are only needed in National Forest areas (like most of Laguna Mtns, Sunrise Hwy, Noble Cyn, etc. which are in the Cleveland Nat'l Forest).

not to steal the thread, but adventure passes were deemed unconstitutional by a federal court several years ago, and you actually never need to buy one. they still sell them for the suckers, but they cannot require you to have one, or ticket you for not having one. :)

I guess I'm a sucker, because I still buy one every year :)

The way I heard the story on this was that due to the ruling (cited in the article you linked to), the Forest Service just had to change the requirements and enforcement rules. Now the pass is only required at parking areas where there are "amenities" such as toilets or picnic tables. Trailheads without such amenities don't require the passes. In the Laguna Mtn. area, Penny Pines is one such area that does NOT require the pass; other popular trailhead/parking areas (the meadow, Wooded Hill, Red Tail Roost, bottom of Noble) DO have restrooms and DO require the pass.

Interesting, but I’ll continue to be one of the suckers, because our National Forests, National Parks, etc. have had their budgets cut again and again. I don’t mind paying a very modest fee ($30/year) to support these areas.

Or how about they sell them for those that want to support the parks with a couple of bucks.
