Hi all,

Sorry that Patrick and I missed the meeting.  We were taking part in ARSC, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, which is a group dedicated exclusively to the study of recorded sound.  I've spent nine years battling the resistance towards the study of sound recordings (not to mention historical studies) among SEM members, and I have to say that ARSC is far more supportive of mediated sound studies.

Anyway, Patrick and I have the following suggestions for books on mediated sound:

Katz, Mark. 2004. Capturing Sound: How Technology Has Changed Music.

Smith, Jacob. 2008. Vocal Tracks: Performance and Sound Media

Sterne, Jonathan. 2003. The Audible Past: Cultural Origins of Sound Reproduction.

Manuel, Peter. 1993. Cassette Culture: Popular Music and Technology in North India. (more of an ethnomusicological bent than the others)

If you're willing to read articles exploring aural culture in general, I'd also recommend Mark M. Smith's edited volume, Hearing History: A Reader.  This book contains a compilation of previously published works on sound history by R. Murray Schafer, Jacques Attali, Douglas Khan, Hillel Schwartz, Alain Corbin, Lisa Gitelman, Emily Thompson, Sterne, and more.  Although only a couple of the articles treat the topic of mediated sound, almost all of them have had a significant impact on current mediated sound scholars.  My one complaint about this book is that it consists primarily of abridged versions of longer works.  You still get the core thesis from each work, but you lose a lot when you pull out 13 pages from the middle of Attali's Noise or Schafer's The Soundscape.  It's more like a theoretical buffet where you can try a small smattering of everything and then decide what you'd like to order off the normal menu the next time around.

Best wishes,
Ronda

Hey Ronda,

This is a good list of books, a couple of which we briefly discussed at our first meeting. It's about time for us to schedule another meeting. If anyone has any work they'd like to present, please reply. Otherwise, we might take a reading from one of these works for discussion. I was thinking the introductory chapter of Sterne's Audible Past might be a good first reading. Thoughts, anyone? I'd be willing to scan it and share it via email. Also, we agreed on once a month for our meetings, but I don't think we picked a day. Any thoughts on that?

I'd also like to hear about the SEM panel and ARSC, which might be a good way to kick off the meeting.

Best,
Mack

If it's at all possible for you to scan it, that would be awesome. The
two copies in the library here are checked out. :( Well, supposedly
anyway. IUCAT told me two books were unavailable for a paper I just
finished writing, so I shelled out $60 for them, only to find them while
trying to find another book in the stacks. :P

Any time for the meetings works for me as long as it's not between
9:30-10:30a. I've a class going on then... That and July 4, I'm helping
my girlfriend "chicken-sit"...

Patrick and I have 9-5 working gigs from Monday through Friday, so
we'd only be able to attend a weekend or evening meeting. If we go
with a weekend, I'm perfectly willing to host the meeting at our place
(hopefully no one in the group is deathly allergic to cats). I'm fine
with discussing Sterne's introductory chapter if everyone else is.

BTW - I thought I'd do a brief plug for the Phonovention that the
Michigan Antique Phonograph Society (MAPS) will be hosting in Auburn,
IN on July 31st and August 1st. As part of the conference, MAPS will
be making a live recording of a brass quintet on wax cylinder and CD
on August 1st. These recordings will then be sealed in a time capsule
until 2109. There are more details on the event at: http://phonovention.com/.
Patrick and I are thinking of going. Roadtrip anyone?

OK, everyone. Sorry for the delay in getting this next meeting lined
up. It was a combination of somewhat sparse response and other things
on my own agenda. However, I think I have a plan now. I'd really like
to squeeze in a July meeting, and as the month is already flying by, I
thought a meeting that did not require any reading would be easier on
everyone. With that in mind, I've asked Patrick Feaster to speak to us
about his recent explorations into the dawn of recorded sound. He has
graciously accepted and is excited to get the group's feedback on some
of the theoretical implications of his work. I think this will be an
absolutely killer meeting and I plan to promote it on the lists of
various departments. First, however, I want to check with you, the
core group, to see your availability for our proposed date, Wed July
22 at 7pm. Please respond asap. If this doesn't work for people, the
alternative is the Monday of that same week.

Thanks,
Mack

That Monday would potentially be the best time for me.

That Wednesday, if I remember correctly, is the night of my midterm for
a course. :( Then, that Saturday, I'm taking the GRE.

His talk sounds like it will be a good time! :)

Hey Mack,

Has anything been set in stone yet regarding the date of meeting up?
Also, is this the same place as we previously met? I remember there
being some conversation about meeting at a CMCL space or something like
that alternatively.

Hi Gary and everyone,

Due to the light response to the last few messages, I think I'll put
this meeting on hold until the fall semester begins. A lot of people
are out of town right now and I think Patrick's talk would be a great
way to kick off the semester and raise attention for the group.

Thanks, have a great summer, and I'll be in touch in the fall!

Mack
