Subject: Hyderabad Unplug - Awareness about Global warming.
Importance: High
Hi all,
Below is the mail from a friend of mine who is actively volunteering on behalf of an NGO (To Make A Difference Group) for the awareness drive against global warming.
I would like you all to visit this site www.hyderabadunplug.com which has all the details regarding this event (7.30 to 8.30 PM on May 3rd, 2008).
It won’t take more than 10 mins to go through this site.
Few things that we can do with a little bit of commitment
1. Let’s first ourselves become aware of Global warming its cause and effects
2. Contribute in our own way to the well being of planet-be it saving power, planting and taking care of a small plant, avoiding deodorants which are not eco friendly etc
3. Create awareness among our parents, neighbours, friends and colleagues.
It can be a smallest thing like switching off our monitors when ever we take short breaks, shutdown before leaving unless needed and switching off the lights in office or home when no one is there.
And as a part of this let us switch off all the electrical appliances in our home for an hour (at least all the lights) from 7.30 to 8.30 PM on May 3rd, 2008.

Subject: Hyderabad Unplug - Awareness about Global warming.
Dear All,
As few of you may be aware, I am working on a voluntary project called 'Hyderabad Unplug'. Our goal is sensitize citizens of Hyderabad about Global Warming and it's consequences. As a token of that we are requesting Hyderabad citizens to voluntarily switch off power from 7.30 to 8.30 PM on May 3rd, 2008.
The inspiration is from Earth hour (Sydney, www.earthhour.org ) and Batti Bandh (Mumbai, www.mumbaiunplug..com ). We are already getting support from various quarters and request you to take this forward in your organization.
Please help by arranging for an appointment with concerned point of Contact ( HR or Corporate Services or CSR wing) in your organization. If it is not possible, forward this information as many contacts in Hyderabad as possible and help in making this project a success.
Please forward to our other friends whose ids are missing with me. Hoping for a positive reply.
Regards,
Ravi.
Hyderabad Unplug Team
A people's initiative supported by
Come, Commit, Conserve.
Hyderabad Unplug is a voluntary campaign urging Hyderabad's citizens to turn off the lights and unplug electrical devices for an hour on May 03, 2008 from 7.30 to 8.30 pm. It aims to kindle awareness about global warming among the citizens and serving institutions of this city and inspires them to take a small step towards addressing the climate crisis by turning off the lights for an hour.
How serious is the global warming threat?
The effects of global warming on India vary from the submergence of low-lying islands and coastal lands to the melting of glaciers in the Indian Himalayas, threatening the volumetric flow rate of many of the most important rivers of India thereby affecting the lives of millions of people. As a result of ongoing climate change, the climate of India has become increasingly volatile over the past several decades and this trend is expected to continue.
Global Warming Footprints in India
· Rising ocean levels have flooded about 18,500 acres (7,500 hectares) of mangrove forest, in Sunderbans, during the past three decades.
· Coral reef bleaching is rapidly taking place in Indian Ocean.
· Glaciers in the Himalayas are retreating at an average rate of 50 feet (15 m) per year, consistent with the rapid warming.
· Rivers and lakes are fast drying up.
What else can you do?
· Unplug appliances on standby. They use 10% of your electricity.
· Use less water. In your generation you might not have enough drinking water left.
· Unplug your chargers once you are done using them as even though it might be switched off, it still consumes electricity.
· Say no to plastic. It takes centuries to decompose and honestly you really don't need it.
· Car Pool, Cab Pool - think of it this way, less cars on the road, less traffic, you'll reach faster, and you'll have company.
