To be named in honor of long-time MLM volunteers, Fred and Martha
Chael, and Lloyd Dykman, the Life Skills Center provides basic computer
skill training and online access to web sites to file job applications.
Located at MLM's 3031 Holmes Street location, the center already
includes four computer stations where MLM consumers can learn basic
Windows and online applications. Later programs will target
applications such as Excel and PowerPoint. The center also provides
access to programs offered by other agencies. The state of Missouri,
for instance, offers general equivalency diploma (GED) information
online.
"The online programs are the first priority because so many job
applications are filled out online now," explained Life Skills
Specialist Nate Whiters. "Online access is a major component to
getting a job these days."
The new Life Skills Center is being developed as part of remodeling at
MLM's central office. Volunteers at MLM remodeled previously
underutilized space to provide new room for Elderly Services and other
programs, freeing the area now being remodeled for Life Skills. The
center provides space for the computers, as well as classes on
everything from job applications to social and life management skills.
"You can do very little today without computer knowledge and a
computer," Whiters concluded. "This opens the door for a lot of
people."
