A celebration of Metro Lutheran Ministry's 35 Years of "Making
Lives Matter" and a fun fund-raising event will be held Nov. 4, from
5:30 to 9 p.m. at Drexel Hall, 3301 Baltimore, Kansas City.

The evening will feature Sue Vicory and her film, "Homelessness and
the Power of One." Entertainment will be provided by Bloodstone, the
R&B band that created the soundtrack for her documentary.

After working more than 20 years in her family business, Vicory saw an
opportunity to combine her passion for film making with a desire to
communicate something vital.
"I was curious about what made someone homeless and how are they
different from me," she explained from her Overland Park home. "I
realized your average citizen like myself does not have that knowledge.
People here say, 'Do you mean there's homeless in Kansas City?' I
realized that education was critical."

Sue formed her own non-profit film company, Heartland Films, Inc. and
began traveling the country with a film crew. Visiting 15 cities from
New York to Los Angeles, she interviewed people who were homeless to
learn about their lives.

"The first thing that strikes you is the cross-section of people,"
she noted. "I found single-parent families, children in cars, older
people who had an unexpected medical catastrophe-all of them had
become homeless. We often have a very shortsighted view of who and why
people become homeless."

Vicory found a thread of hope: even single individuals can bring about
change. "My question became, 'What could one person do?'" she
recalled. "As I say in the video, it doesn't need to cost money. It
can be time or attention. I saw that over and over."

The evening will also feature entertainment by Bloodstone, the locally
based rhythm and blues group that is often described as Kansas City's
equivalent to the Temptations of Detroit.

Tickets for the fund-raising dinner are $75 per person, $50 for those
over the age of 65. Attire for the event is dressy. A welcome reception
will begin the event. Please RSVP by Oct. 25, either by calling MLM at
(816) 931-0027, or online through the MLM Internet site, www.mlmkc.org.
