We - Nikolay Malkin (https://malkin1729.github.io) and Ivan Titov (https://ivan-titov.org/) - are happy to announce a fully-funded 3.5-year PhD studentship at the School of Informatics of the University of Edinburgh, for September 2026 start, on language-based state representations for time series modelling, with applications in health data monitoring and beyond. Our goal will be to develop methods that integrate knowledge stored in large language models with continuous-time sensor data. This will produce interpretable models that are grounded in real data, yet support text-based forecasting, causal, and counterfactual queries.
Students will benefit from close collaboration with and mentorship from experts in NLP and probabilistic inference, a large and diverse student community, and a stimulating research environment in beautiful Edinburgh. The funding includes computational resources, travel support, and a standard stipend. Apply via the ILCC program, the programme details and application requirements can be found at https://study.ed.ac.uk/programmes/postgraduate-research/491-informatics-ilcc-language-processing-speech-technology.
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds - no domain expertise required - and promote an inclusive culture. We especially encourage women, queer folks, individuals from racial/ethnic minorities, and all other underrepresented groups in ML/AI research to apply.
