The Machine Learning and Simulation Science (MLSim) research group is led by Mathias Niepert, a full professor (W3) at the University of Stuttgart (official start date: 1/1/2022). Homepage: http://matlog.net
The group will be part of the Cluster of Excellence for the Simulation Sciences (SimTech) and the department of Computer Science at the University of Stuttgart. Mathias is also a faculty member of the International Max Planck Research School for Intelligent Systems (IMPRS-IS) and his professorship will be part of the wider CyberValley ecosystem. The University of Stuttgart has also a unit in the ELLIS network.
The MLSim group is working on core machine learning research with a focus on graph neural networks and geometric deep learning, the synthesis of discrete (algorithmic) components and continuous learning systems, and the intersection of machine learning and the simulation sciences. If you are interested in our work (published regularly at ICML, NeurIPS, AAAI, EMNLP, IJCAI, ICLR) please take a look at the publication section of this website and visit our video channel.

The MLSim group has multiple PhD positions (100% TV-L E13) open:
If you have a Master's degree you can apply directly by sending an email with your CV and a research statement to jobs at simtech dot uni-stuttgart dot de, clearly indicating that you are applying to the group of Mathias Niepert. The Master's degree should be related to ML/AI topics or in physics/engineering/the simulation sciences. The research statement should outline some prior work and the kind of research you would be excited to conduct in the future. Please make sure that it relates your interests and goals to the publications and research topics (see above) of the group. Please note that PhDs in Germany are not considered students but are full-time employees of the university with social benefits (health, retirement, paid vacation days, etc.) and a full salary. The application deadline is January 15th 2022.
Feel free to reach out to me personally (mniepert at gmail dot com) if you have questions about the positions and/or life in Germany.
