We are excited to announce the second workshop on casual XAI “𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗫𝗔𝗜 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗜𝗜” which takes place at Ulster University on 21st November 2025. This event is hosted by the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (AIRC) which is located within the School of Computing on the Belfast campus of Ulster University.
After the success of the first workshop held in 2023 in Queen Mary University of London, this unmissable event offers a forum to present new research, debating foundational issues, share tools and datasets, and reflect on the societal and ethical dimensions of causal XAI. The Programme is chaired by
· Dr David Glass, Ulster University
· Prof. Jun Liu, Ulster University
· Dr Evangelia Kyrmi, QMUL
· Dr William Marsh, QMUL
· Prof David Lagnado, UCL
There is also the opportunity to display a poster (abstract submission required). And we invite contributions on a broad range of topics including, but not limited to:
· Foundations of Causal XAI
· Explainability techniques grounded in causality
· Human-centred and domain-specific causal explanations
· Evaluation metrics for causal XAI
· Trust, transparency, and accountability in causal models
· Human-in-the-loop and hybrid intelligence systems
· Causal XAI and Generative AI (e.g LLMs)
Attendees can network and hear from leading experts in the field; including our key speakers:
· Prof. Hana Chockler, King's College London, "Causal Explainability in the Healthcare Domain"
· Prof. Feng Dong, University of Strathclyde, “Causality Meets Generative Models: From Clinical Trial Emulation to Counterfactual Reasoning"
· Dr Hui Guo, University of Manchester, "Fast machine learning causal discovery network analysis in health"
· Prof Mark Keane, University College Dublin, "Kicking the Tyres on Contrastive XAI: Semi-factual and Counterfactual Explanations Appear to Serve Different Goals"
· Prof David Lagnado, University College London, "Causal Models for Explanation: Mind, Body and Spirit"
· Dr Jonathan Richens, Google DeepMind, "Agents are World Models"
· Prof. Elias Bareinboim, Columbia University, title TBC
To register, please complete the online application form to attend and include an abstract (max 300 words) if you would like to present a poster. For further information, please visit Causal XAI Workshop II; or E-mail any of:
