It is with sadness that I announce the passing of Professor Charles Micchelli on March 9, 2025, at his home in New Jersey, at the age of 82, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Pat, and their two children, Lisa and Craig.
Throughout his distinguished career—first at IBM Watson and later at SUNY Albany—Charlie made fundamental contributions to Approximation Theory. His work also deeply influenced Machine Learning and Statistics, shaping the study of Radial Basis Functions, the approximation theory of Neural Networks in the late ’80s and ’90s, and later, Kernel Methods, among others.
For those who had the privilege of knowing him, Charlie was always available, engaging, and full of good humor.
He will be deeply missed.
