Dear ML enthusiasts,
Interested in bringing epistemic intelligence to machine learning systems? Here’s an excellent opportunity for that!
I am excited to share that several PhD positions are now open in the newly established Epistemic Intelligence & Computation (EPIC) Lab at the College of Computing and Data Science (CCDS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Our lab’s mission is to advance the theory and practice of Epistemic Machine Learning, i.e. to develop intelligent systems that:
- Recognise the limitations of their knowledge (uncertainty-awareness)
- Effectively communicate their insights (explainability), and
- Seamlessly collaborate with human users (preference modelling and integration).
Highlight of the Positions:
- Research Topics: The PhD projects will focus on one or intersections of the following directions:
- Uncertainty-aware ML:
- Designing algorithms to handle imprecision and ambiguity across the typical learning pipeline, addressing data, algorithmic, optimisation, and deployment uncertainties.
- Explainable ML:
- Advancing attribution-based and counterfactual-based explanation techniques and studying their implications to the statistical learning paradigm when deployed in practice, e.g. can we treat feature attribution provided by experts as some “prior” information to learn accordingly?
- Preference Modelling:
- Developing algorithms to learn from or elicit preference and choice feedback from human users, with application in human-in-the-loop sequential experimental design problems.
- Host Institution: College of Computing and Data Science, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
- Funding: Fully funded scholarships are available.
- Application Deadline: Open until the positions are filled.
- Commence Date: Summer 2025.
- How to apply: Please refer to the attached recruitment letter and visit this link for further information.
Please share this opportunity with anyone who may be interested. I appreciate your support in spreading the word!
