Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship in
"Heuristics for Resource-Constrained Optimization"
at the School of Computer Science, University of Manchester, UK

Closing date for applications: 15 August 2008
Project to start: September - October 2008

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in the
Machine Learning and Optimization Group of the School of Computer
Science. The research programme will explore the behaviour of
iterative heuristic search methods on optimization problems with
resource constraints.

The candidate will ideally have experience or an interest in one or
more of the following areas, which are central to the project:

evolutionary computing / metaheuristics / hybrid metaheuristics
multiobjective optimization
combinatorial optimization
dynamic and constrained optimization
metamodeling / surrogate modelling
machine learning

The programme can be tailored to suit a theoretical or empirical
approach. For candidates with an interest in computational biology,
there are also opportunities for applying the research to open
problems in this area.

The School of Computer Science at Manchester is globally renowned for
its research quality, having contributed to some of the discipline's
most exciting and important innovations, from the creation of the
world's first stored program computer, to the development of next
generation web technologies. We received a 6* rating at the last RAE.

The Studentship
The studentship provides maintenance of £12590 p.a. (tax free) plus
fees for EU nationals. Fees for overseas students are higher and are
not covered by this funding; overseas student must be able to
demonstrate they can pay the higher fees before they will be
considered.

A strong background (good honours degree or above) in computer
science, mathematics, or another numerate discipline is a prerequisite
for this PhD programme.
