problems getting stereo to work

I'm having trouble getting hardware stereo working and am hoping
someone can clue me in.

I'm running linux with the 2010.10 release of MIFit.

In the 'Viewpoint' tab, the 'Use Hardware Stereo' button is greyed out
and the 'Stereo' button below it has an 'X' through it.

I don't have a problem running hardware stereo with Coot and am
wondering if there is a setting somewhere that I need to enable to get
this going.

I no longer have access to stereo hardware, and therefore, can not
diagnose stereo issues.
