There is nothing like the flavor of a home grown tomato, but many local gardeners have been frustrated by our cool summers.   Popular varieties found in the big box stores often perform poorly in cool weather.  But lesser-known varieties like Defiant, Black Cherry and Mama Leone can produce wonderful crops even in cool weather.

For the past three years, the Master Gardeners of San Mateo and San Francisco counties have grown and sold thousands of tomato seedlings, as well as peppers and herbs, that have been especially selected for local success. This year, the Elks Lodge will be hosting their one day Tomato and Pepper Plant Sale to be held on Saturday, April 14.  The Master Gardeners will be selling 35 varieties of tomatoes in all sizes and colors, including many varieties chosen specifically to perform well in cool and foggy areas.  Among this year’s new varieties are three that are resistant to late blight, the bane of many a home tomato grower.  They will also have 15 varieties of peppers—from sweet to hot—and 6 popular varieties of herbs.  For a complete list, check out http://ucanr.org/sites/MGsSMSF/Special_events/Tomato_Sale/.  Master Gardeners will be on hand the day of the sale to answer all your gardening questions.

The sale will be held at the Elks Lodge at 229 West 20th Avenue in San Mateo , from 9am-1pm on Saturday, April 14.  All seedlings are priced at $4.  Sales are cash or check only.  Bring your own boxes or bags for easy shopping.

This event is co-sponsored by Lyngso Garden Materials, Elks Lodge 1112 and Ah Sam Florist, Greenhouse and Home Décor.
