Lens and Reflector.
image--streetlight installation The lens, along with the reflector -- a
polished surface inside the luminaire -- controls and directs light produced
by the lamp, focusing it where needed to produce the desired light pattern.
Luminiares with horizontally mounted lamps may have either a "drop lens" or
a "flat lens."
Drop lens types are sometimes called "semi-cutoff" lenses because the
shape of the lens focuses the light into the desired pattern of
distribution. Drop lens types are commonly found in luminaires with lower
wattage lamps and are used to economically light larger areas with fewer
poles. Residential streets in Kansas City will have 100- or 150-watt drop
lens luminaires.
Flat lenses or "cutoff" types are commonly used with higher wattage
lamps on wide streets. This is done to reduce glare from beams of light
coming directly into the eye, which interferes with a person's ability to
see other objects. Major streets in Kansas City will have 250- or 400-watt
flat lens or "cutoff" luminaires.
