Dear Gary,

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, everyone at Transportation Alternatives hopes you, your family and your friends are safe, dry and together. With many subways underwater and gas running low citywide, now more than ever, your bicycle is the best way to get around New York City.

To help you get back on your routine and find the best way from A to B on our recovering streets, Transportation Alternatives is your number one resource. Check out the list below to find out where -- starting Friday and continuing as long as it’s needed -- you can get free protected bike parking in Midtown Manhattan, free coffee and bike repairs on your commute, and all the maps, guides and how-to’s you need for bicycling in New York City:

WHERE TO PARK YOUR BIKE
With the generous help of the Times Square Alliance, T.A. is providing a safe place for all Midtown Manhattan bike commuters to park their bike. Stop by the #BikeSandy Resource Hub, in Times Square just north of 47th Street, for hot coffee, snacks, information about bicycle commuting, basic bike repairs and bike valet parking.

If your employer lets you bring your bike inside, or you yourself are an employer who does the same, T.A. wants to spread your story: Please let us know! If you’re not in Midtown Manhattan, now is a great time to tell your employer, building owner or super that your bikes should be allowed to roll right through the front door.

TAKE A BREAK ON YOUR COMMUTE
With hot coffee, snacks, information about bicycle commuting and basic bike repairs, T.A. will be on your commute. Besides T.A.’s Times Square #BikeSandy Hub, you can find some friendly bicyclists on your morning and evening commute at the following locations:

From 8 to 10 am, find us on the Williamsburg Bridge (in Brooklyn), Manhattan Bridge (in Manhattan), Queensboro Bridge (in Queens) and on the northwest corner of 6th Avenue and 26th Street in Manhattan.

From 5 to 7 pm, find us on the Williamsburg Bridge (in Brooklyn), Manhattan Bridge (in Manhattan), and in Manhattan at 2nd Avenue and 9th Street and at 5th Avenue at 25th Street.

SMILE FOR #BIKESANDY
As you get from A to B, the sights are likely photo-worthy. From trees in the bike lane to the hundreds of thousands bicycling New Yorkers, we want to see your pictures. On Twitter and Instagram, use the hashtag #BikeSandy and we’ll add your photos to our slideshow at BikeNYC.org.

BICYCLING RESOURCES
Find maps and bike shops, learn the rules of the road and get information on how to get involved in bike advocacy in your neighborhood at bikenyc.org/resources.

New Yorkers like you, who take action for safer streets, help make New York City a better place every single day. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, we need be those conscious, outspoken New Yorkers more than ever. Thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

Paul Steely White
Executive Director
Transportation Alternatives

P.S.: Join me and T.A.’s Bicycle Advocacy Director Caroline Samponaro for a fun group bike commute from Midtown Manhattan to Brooklyn on Friday. We’re leaving from T.A.’s Times Square #BikeSandy Hub at 5 pm.
