As of Monday April 2, there is still just one Loon on Clam Lake. Have not determined if it is banded. The ANI was put out last weekend and I have been having trouble with pair of Canada Geese that are determined to make it their nest. I hadn’t planned on keeping a boat in the water this early in the season but this has turned into a real battle of wills. Over the last three seasons the Loons began using the ANI between April 13 and April 17.

Fred,
So far no pairs on Bellaire. I had big trouble a few years back with
geese trying to take over the nest AFTER the loons were incubating. I
had to row our dinghy out and yell at them a few times...they finally
stopped bugging the loons. It didn't help that I had a new female that
was nesting in that territory for the first time! Didn't know how to
WORK efficiently with her new mate - I'll not mention her sloppy nesting
techniques! What are you trying to do to quell the situation?
I don't plan on putting out my ANI's until about the 15th....so chicks
are born AFTER Memorial Day Weekend screaming boater time;0) Hopefully
I'll continue to miss the geese too - they should have already
established a nest!
Good luck. Feel free to call me to brainstorm any ideas.
Linda
