I noticed something that I thought odd when extracting data from a tar
archive on tape.

Perhaps someone can clarify this as the documentation on tar doesn't
seem to address my question.

tar -tv /dev/st0

the above lists the contents of the tar file on st0 as such:

filename A
filename B
...

etc

however when I view a dump of the raw data in a hex editor with a dd

it shows the files in a different order on the tape

filename K
filename A
filename D
filename C

etc.

So, it seems tar -tv sorts its listing before displaying it? Does
anyone know if this is accurate?

Thanks,
Rob
