I recently purchased a Dell XPS M1210 notebook.
It comes with Intel Pro Wireless 3945.
I am trying to configure it under Ad-Hoc mode.
Here's my settings:
iface eth2home inet static
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
dns-nameservers 202.88.156.6
wireless-essid Home
wireless-mode Ad-Hoc
wireless-channel 3
wireless-rate auto
With "iwconfig eth2" I notice that the device gets associated to the
proper "Home" network, but doing a ping to 192.168.1.1 results in:
Destination Host Unreachable.
My route -n is:
192.168.1.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth2
0.0.0.0 192.168.1.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth2
which I think is correct.
I don't think settings have any issue because the same network settings work
from Windows.
Has anyone been able to use ipw3945 in Ad-Hoc mode ?

WOW!!! DELL XPS man.. you/dad/research_pay must be some real hard
cash!!! :-)
I use wire isntead of wireless so I dont know much about wireless stuff
but I used to roam around long long time before to read mails and
articles.
I am not sure whether this will solve but have you tried "dhclient
eth1/whatever_your_device_is" ??? So, as far as I've understood, your
network associates to "HOME". umm.. try asking at some mailing list or
IRC.
iwconfig eth1 gives me (using ipw2200)
eth1 radio off ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Channel:0 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate=0 kb/s Tx-Power=off
Retry limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0

What does your /etc/hosts list ?

It looks like you are missing a default gateway from your route output.
try:
#route add default gw 192.168.1.1
I have a similar card -- Intel Corp. PRO/Wireless 2200BG and have it
working

I felt that my route (see below in the quoted text) was correct.
But I might be wrong. I'll try what you've suggested and see if that
helps. :-)

I'm a little confused with what you've written. :-)
But really, I didn't find it that expensive. Given that I wanted a portable
notebook, the offerings from other vendors (IBM, HP, Mac) were much more
expensive. And I've used Dell machines earlier also.
They are superb in service, support and price.
dhclient won't help because I'm assign static IP addresses.
Home is the essid I've assigned to the wireless network.

Yeah, at this point your eth1 device isn't associated to any networks.
