Setting up a service in gentoo simple

What is the easiest way to setup a service(mainly a java service) that
launches on startup.

I have looked at some of the ebuilds but they contain 3,4,5 files, can
I just put a file in 'init.d' and have a start and stop function.

Some of the problems I have seen is changing users and then starting it
up?
