On 10 January the EU House hosted the event for launching the Danish EU Presidency. Addresses were delivered by representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Commission Representation in Latvia, the Embassy of Poland and the Embassy of Denmark. As from 1 January 2012, Denmark takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, being a part of the Trio Presidency held by Poland, Denmark and Cyprus.
The Head of the EU Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Artis Bērtulis in his address introduced the audience to Latvia’s priorities during the Danish Presidency: the EU Multiannual Financial Framework for 2014-2020, including the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy; sustainable economic growth and financial stability; energy and transport policy; external relations.
The Head of the European Commission Representation in Latvia Inna Šteinbuka thanked the Polish Presidency for its professional performance and wished success to the Danish Presidency in taking forward the negotiations on the EU’s multiannual budget.
Deputy Chief of Mission in the Embassy of Poland Danuta Kuczynska informed those present that the preparatory stage for the EU Multiannual Financial Framework was launched during the Polish Presidency, which resulted in drafting an assessment report. A number of important conferences have taken place and a special focus was placed on the EU enlargement matters.
The Ambassador of Demark to Latvia Per Carlsen informed the audience that four priorities have been set under the Danish presidency: a responsible, dynamic, green, and safe Europe. A number of cultural events have been planned during the presidency period in Latvia, and further information on those will be available on the website of the Embassy of Denmark.
