Just curious if anyone knows anything about the new organ in the remodeled Ogden Tabernacle.*  I came across the following in an article about the media tour of the Ogden Temple:

"Integral to the temple project was the accompanying reconstruction of the Ogden Tabernacle, with a new pipe organ that was constructed by the same builder who created the instrument in the Church’s Conference Center in Salt Lake City."

So I'm assuming it's a new organ by Schoenstein, but don't know any more details.  Is it all new, or a rebuild of the old Moller?  Anyone know any details?

*I think it looks funny without its spire!

The opus list on Schoenstein's web site doesn't show it.  Hmmm . . .

The Moller opus list (http://www.savetheorgan.org/kbase/opus_lists/moller_opus) shows about 25 organs placed in LDS meetinghouses from about 1940 to 1972.  The Mt. Ogden Ward received a 2-manual-&-pedal organ with 29 registers around 1950.

The pipe organ database of the Organ Historical Society (http://database.organsociety.org/) lists the following organs in Ogden.  It would be nice to document the previous Ogden Tabernacle organ as well as the new organ.  Anyone who has information about a pipe organ is welcome to submit a new or updated entry to this database.

From what I've heard it's a rebuild being done by the Polls of SLC. And it's not done yet. That's all I know.

Please keep us updated on whatever is learned here on the list! I committed joing the AGO once vacation is done with this season. Hopefully, we'll see some hours or something through that venue?

I know of a new venue coming about in Provo, the Provo Community United Church of Christ sanctuary. The sanctuary will be getting a major restoration, updating and renovation coming soon, still in the planning stage. As part of this work it is planned for a 20-40 rank pipe organ to replace the current Rodgers 1992 electronic organ. The building will also be enlarging the stage area, reconfiguring the seating, new AV, lighting, HVAC, and a 40 foot high Tom Holdman original art glass window in the front of the building. It is the desire that this space will become more a community gathering place for concerts and events, much as the Provo Tabernacle was before the fire. I am Dave Lewis, the organist, music director and building committee chair.

Jack's info is correct about the Ogden Tabernacle, it's a rebuild by Polls. The info put out about being by Schoenstein is not correct.

According to Robert Poll and Clay Christiansen, the author of the Church News article misunderstood a statement made during the media tour.  Paul and Jack are indeed correct in stating that H. Ronald Poll & Associates of SLC is doing the rebuild.  The original instrument was by Balcom & Vaughan, later expanded and rebuilt by Mervin Brown (in 1994) and H. Ronald Poll (in 1999).  Prior to the current rebuild, it had 40 or 41 ranks.  A specification of the instrument as it stood before the Tabernacle's recent renovation is at http://elliottrl.tripod.com/utahpipes/ogdentab.html.

Thank you, everyone, for your replies!  I have now idea why I thought it was a Moller, and it totally makes sense that Poll is doing the work - I don't think I've ever read a news article about organs that didn't get something wrong!  I'm excited that the church decided to put a pipe organ back in the tabernacle, and hope it'll be a successful instrument.

Paul,

Our firm is getting together a specification and "press release" for the pipe organ in the Ogden Tabernacle.  We are not yet complete with the tonal work on the organ and when we are there will be a concert given on the organ.  This will be headed by Ruland Christiansen (an organist in Ogden).  Thank you for being interested in what is going on with the organ.  Please send me your e-mail address (to poll....@gmail.com) and I will add you to the list of people to send the specifications to.  Anyone else that is part of this group can request a copy as well.  Just send me an e-mail stating who you are and any positions that you have with music (church, school, etc.).

Thanks,

Michael Poll
