LAU FAMILY FARM, LLC

Grass-Fed and Finished * No Antibiotics * No Hormone Implants

We are planning to meet our Logan area customers at Crumb Brothers Bakery (approx 300 S and 300 W) on November 12, from 9 to 10 am.  Our second stop will be at Old Town Pocatello’s Office at 420 N Main, Pocatello, from 1 to 1:30 pm.  The final stop will be at DC Natural Foods (159 S Corner Street, Idaho Falls) from 3 to 4 pm.

We are planning our next deliveries for Dec 13th-Logan, Pocatello, Idaho Falls & Dec 20th-Salt Lake City and Ogden.

§  We are currently sold out of ground lamb, chops, lamb stew and kabob.  We have a good supply of boneless leg and shoulder roasts, as well as few bone-in whole leg roasts.  We are working on having all lamb cuts when we deliver in December, but at the latest we’ll have a full complement in January.

§  We can take a few more requests for standing rib roasts (beef prime ribs), rib eye roasts and tenderloin roasts.  Please get your requests in ASAP.

§  We have 4 beef bundles available currently.

§  We have several types of lamb sausages available-lamb and apple, garlic and rosemary, merguez and Italian lamb with sun dried tomato as well as lamb salami.  We also have beef andouille sausage available.  We have uncased packages of many of the lamb sausage varieties for those who are trying to avoid pork.  We will have more types of beef sausages for our December deliveries.

§  We are currently out of lamb bones and have several back orders for various types of beef bones.  We hope to have the ability to fill new orders in December (beef) and January (lamb).

§  We have quite a few lamb hearts, kidneys and livers available.  We also have a variety of beef organs on hand.  We have a good supply of beef fat at the moment.

All last week we found ourselves saying, wow this is the first time in months that we haven’t gone to the butchers, worked on orders, gotten up early on a Saturday, etc.  It was really nice to have Saturday off, and to know that we aren’t starting up again until the 8th

We are in the countdown to snow fall and farm road closures with the added incentive of John’s hip replacement surgery scheduled on Nov 19th.  We have a lot of things to do between now and then!  I’m not sure how quick John will be back up to speed, but I’m guessing I’ll be doing a lot more farm chores, as well as all the kid chauffeuring till mid December.  We have a good friend lined up to help, but if the snow holds off and the road stays open we won’t be having to feed the mother cows.  I can’t pull start the snowmachine so our friend is on the hook, once we get to that point.  I think I’ll be able to keep the calves, meat steers and ewes and lambs fed here at the house.  Its been a long time since I did any serious tractor work so I’m trying to get my projects underway enough that I can get some reminder lessons in before the surgery.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be mouthing and bagging the ewes (checking udders and teeth), as well as giving them a booster vaccination to prevent abortions and a de-worming medicine.  After that’s done, the ewes we need to remove from the flock and some of the most mature lambs will come to town so we can get them dropped off.  Soon thereafter all the sheep will be coming to town for the winter, so I’ve got to check the fences in the hay field where they winter.  We also need to vaccinate the “long yearlings” (calves that were a year old in May) or at least the ones that won’t be harvested in the next 60 days.  Then they and all the current year calves will be moved to the house farm for the winter and we’ll have to start feeding hay since we don’t have enough pasture ground here.

We’ve asked the butcher to try to squeeze some lambs into his schedule before the mid December date we were able to get.  So we’ll have to have some lambs ready to load and deliver with just a day’s notice in case that comes to pass.  I’m hoping he can be cajoled into moving our Dec beef harvest back a week so that I won’t have to load and haul the 5 steers myself while John is recovering and unable to drive.  John has a bit more hay to haul in from Bancroft, and we need to get the wool crop down to Toole as well so we can park in the wing of the shop again.

Tom’s chiropractor has suggest physical therapy so that should start this week.  We have parent teacher conferences this week so we’ll learn more about how both kids are doing at those.  Becca has finished up cross country and while she didn’t make the basketball team she was offered the position of manager.  She is going to all the games (thankfully not the practices too) as well as cheering at the boys wrestling matches.  She is making good progress on selling her 50 Job’s Daughter Christmas wreaths which will pay for next summer’s Grand Session meetings.  They are due to arrive about the same time as the surgery so maybe John will get some peace and quiet while we go out delivering wreaths around town.  The Idaho Job’s daughters leadership group-adults and girls- will be doing their annual visit in early November so we’ve got some work to do to get ready for that.  I’m thinking I won’t be able to go to the Idaho Farm Bureau annual meeting in early December so I’ve got to find other board members to attend and go thru the resolutions they’ll be voting on.

Last week, I got nearly all the receipts we’ve collected over the summer entered in the accounting system and filed away until tax time.  Still a bunch of paper work left to sort thru though-I swear the Farm Bureau sends out a tree a week!

I’ve made a good start on getting cutting instructions for upcoming beef and lamb orders requested so hopefully that won’t sneak up on me while John is down for the count.  If you haven’t heard from me feel free to “poke” and make sure you haven’t gotten lost in the system.
