This summer is progressing as most summers do..busy, busy, busy. Since I’ve taken on more responsibilities for outside chores (keeping animals where they belong, fed and watered and health monitored) in addition to keeping the family, home and business going I usually feel like I have more things that need doing than there are hours in a day, and days in a week. The list of farm chores never seems to get shorter despite three of us working at it. Becca seems to dodge many of the farm chores by having 101 activities each day/week. I really don’t know how John kept any of the balls in the air when it was just him farming while I was raising babies.
The sheep and meet steer keep working their way across the pastures. Last night I was out feeding one of my bottle babies, and checking fence, at dusk and the steers thought I was going to advance the fence for them. They followed me all around the pasture, some of them all but breathing on my neck, and were disappointed when they had to wait till morning for a fresh patch to munch on. We continue to work on spot spraying the thistles at both properties. The sheep are beginning to get to the stage where they have enough wool, and the ground is dry enough, that they don’t get a serious zap from the temporary electric fence. This has created some frustrating moments, and some trampled hay. Thank goodness someone who knew sheep invented electric net fencing-they don’t even try to go thru those fences.
I spent 2 full days last week on the great paperwork fiasco that my father-in law left us when he passed away. Yesterday we passed the vast majority of our “homework” off to the professionals. Now we wait and see what they can do with it all. It will be so wonderful to have his estate settled and to not have the questions and concerns hanging over us anymore.
Since we are staying home from markets on the 2nd, we’ll have just about 2 weeks off and I’m hoping we can find some friends and go just sit by the lake or something for a day. John has started mowing hay so he’ll be running on empty before long as he tries to keep up with getting the hay raked and in bales on schedule.
Becca is finishing cheerleading camp today, and softball season continues. Her group got 2nd place in their competition at the Job’s Daughters state meeting, which she was very pleased with. As honored queen she had a lot of parts to memorize. Tom was tickled to be asked to help teach the Shotgun 4-H class, and to be told that he is an excellent shot by the leader. He is FFA treasurer so he’s trying to mobilize the group to raise some money on the 4th of July. Today is the county Farm Bureau Picnic so I’ll soon be off to pick up the food, and get the pavilion ready for the party.
Many thanks for your business,
John, Lori Anne, Tom and Becca Lau
