We will be attending the Idaho Falls Farmers Market on Saturday, August 22nd and 29th. Look for us between 9 and 1 pm in the Key Bank Parking lot along the river in Idaho Falls. We plan to be back in IF on September 12th and 19th.
· August 22nd Special: Just in time for back to school meals Top Sirloin Steaks, Top Sirloin Kabob Cubes and Top Sirloin Roasts are $13 per lb. Regular kabob, stew, stir fry (steak strips) and boneless short ribs are $8 per lb.
· In addition to our regular ground beef ($6/lb), we have some extra lean ground beef ($7/lb), and some ground sirloin($8/lb).
· We have a full assortment of beef and lamb cuts. We updated our price schedule at the beginning of August. We may tweak our prices a bit more frequently in the future, to avoid big changes in price. We hope you will determine our products to be worth of our asking price.
· We have a new batches of both beef and lamb sausages: We have beef Bratwurst, Sweet Italian, Frankfurter and Andouille. We also have Lamb and Apple, Garlic and Rosemary, Italian Lamb with sun-dried tomato and Merguez. Beef sausages are $9 per lb, lamb sausages are $10 per lb. We have uncased (bulk style) versions of some of these for those of you who are looking to avoid the pork casing.
· Response time to emailed orders had become horribly long of late, but I’m hoping to do better in the coming weeks. I’m not keeping up very well with my business tasks…
It is unbelievable that our kids will be starting back to school in less than a week. Tom will be a sophomore, and Becca is in 8th grade. I know I “lost” July to dealing with John’s Dad’s health crisis, but I’m really not sure where June went. Everything since lambing (late April) has been a blur.
We are freshly returned from a once in a blue moon vacation and are trying to pick up where we left off. My father rented a house in South Lake Tahoe, and talked both of my brothers, and I into bringing our families there. We even had my eldest niece, she’s a college senior, with us. Dad and Ian, who lives in Tasmania, will be at the house for the full 10 days. We were able to be there for 5 days, and Scott, who lives in AZ, will be there for 8 days-he and his clan arrived late. It was fun to see the nieces and nephews, brothers, and sister-in-laws and get to just hang out. Papa gave the kids some money to spend on adventures so Becca got to go parasailing, and Tom went on a 5 hr fishing trip. We also got to take a short field trip to Virginia City, taking along my eldest nephew (Sam is 10 now). We checked out several of the museums got a tour of a gold mine, road a historic train. It would take a week to see all there is to see in that area. That night we met up for dinner (in Carson City) with two of my favorite people in the world-Jeff and Denise Hunewill. I worked for them as a nanny the summer I turned 16, and again the next summer. I really want to take John and the kids to see their summer ranch in Bridgeport, but didn’t get it done this trip. The Hunewill family has had a working ranch in the Sierras for more than a century, and they’ve had a Guest/Dude ranch operation since the great depression. My family first starting going there as guests when I was about 10, and I worked there three summers, Ian worked there one summer. Our plans to get together with Jeff and Denise were nearly high-jacked by a fire that was burning near one of their cattle grazing allotments. Thankfully the fire stayed away from the animals and they didn’t have to go deal with that the night we had planned to see them. My attempts to figure out the status of the fire haven’t amounted to much yet, but fires are a constant threat/issue for all of us. Having livestock that might be in harm’s way must be extremely stressful. We owe our friend Garrett, a huge thank you for dealing with naughty cows, troublesome solar water pumps, and the various things that went wrong, or just needed checking for the 7 nights we were gone. Being away from the farm during the farm for more than a night or two is something that very rarely happens, especially during the summer months.
John’s Dad, Grant, seems to be doing okay physically. His medium term memory is really lousy lately, and he has big blanks in his memory of the last 6 weeks. Several members of the extended family, and family friends, checked on him while we were gone, filling his fridge with more food than he could ever eat. A week without me hovering over him, seems to have improved his disposition. For now I guess, we just focus on enjoying our time with him, and encourage him to be as independent as he wants to be.
Back in July we changed our prices for half beef orders, and on the 1st of August we started with new beef prices. We may tweak our prices a bit at a time in the future, instead of waiting and making this kind of larger jump in prices. We hope that you will find our meat to be of sufficient quality to warrant our prices.
In the middle of August our family expanded with addition of a little black lab puppy. Ace, our 3 or 4 year old black lab shows no interest in fetching, water, and is gun shy. Hopefully the new addition, will be a better duck hunting partner for John and the kids, and Ace will remain a “go to the farm partner”, “truck surfer” and family dog. We had competing name ideas of Belle and Jessie for the puppy. Grant and I both thought of “Jezebel” but we ended up going with Tessebel or just Tess. The last thing we needed in our chaotic lives was a shoe, carpet, cord chewing puppy but such is life. Jade, our antique border collie, has surprised us with his patience, while Ace has far less enthusiasm for the puppy. The two inside-outside cats have been giving Tess a lesson in leaving cats alone. All of the dogs were very pleased to be released from the “puppy jail” where they were boarded while we were away. I suspect the vet’s staff was glad to have the yippy puppy out of there too.
Many thanks for your business, and your thoughts and prayers,
