·        We still have some spots for quarter, half and whole beef with late winter (approx Feb-March delivery) dates available.  We are also taking deposits for whole and half lambs for delivery in approx January.  These, along with most other items we sell, have had a price increase this summer.  All of our prices are listed on our website (www.laufamilyfarm.com).

Check with us at the farmers markets to see what we have marked down for the day.

The last two weeks since John’s dad (Grant) passed away on Aug 26th have been a blur.  We got thru the visitation (closed casket viewing) last Thursday night, and had the gravesite service on Friday morning, followed by a very nice celebratory meal for about 75 people at noon on Friday.  John coordinated all the volunteers for the meal/party, but because of the efforts of the Lions club, catholic ladies league, good friends and extended family, the immediate family barely had to lift a finger.  We’d hoped some of the family from out of town would be able to stay in town longer but everyone headed out right after lunch.  John and Sarah seem to be quite happy with how the whole thing went, and all the comments have been that Grant would have approved.

We’ve been greatly moved by all the emails, cards, flowers, donations and help we’ve been extended in the last weeks.  John can barely go anywhere in town without hearing stories about his dad, and well wishes.

John is trying to catch up on all the farm work that has been postponed over the last few months, and last 2 weeks in particular.  Yesterday the custom cutter cut Mrs P’s wheat, and hopefully they’ll get her barley cut and hauled to the grain elevator tomorrow.  The hay John finally baled a few days ago seems to have attracted the attention of the local deer herd, so the quality must not be too bad.  He worries some of the bales will not be “pick-up-able” with the tractor, so the deer may get even more to work on.  I’m surprised they are attracted to the hay when there is uncut alfalfa to graze on just a few feet away.  He still has some hay to haul and stack but I think all the cutting, raking and baling is now over…finally.  He’s got some work to do on Grant’s CRP and for our Conservation Stewardship contract, with deadlines coming up fast.  I’d hoped to send him up to Moscow with his fraternity brothers at the end of the month, but he doesn’t think that is possible now.  I will talk to the kids, and some friends, and see if we can send John north for some R & R while the rest of us go to markets etc.

The kids are getting back into the swing of things.  They are looking forward to going to New York and New Jersey with Aunt Sarah, Uncle Rich and cousin lil Grant in a week.  Our kids will babysit Grant while the adults attend Rich’s cousins wedding and reception, but the rest of the time Aunt and Uncle plan on showing them “a whole ‘nother world”.  I believe they have made arrangements to climb to the top of Lady Liberty as well as visiting several other attractions.

I’m trying to get back into real life but find myself easily distracted, and not very productive.  Hence this email is going out at least 1.5 days later than John wanted it to.  John is executor, but as his “secretary” I’m trying to help where I can.  Unfortunately there is some financial work that has to be sorted out ASAP, according to the lawyer and CPA, so that will add to the chaos this month.  I should be finding myself with spare time now that we aren’t checking on Grant, but so far I haven’t been able to put it to productive use yet.  I’ve attached the remarks John gave on Friday just in case you are interested.  Several people have said they felt they were spot on.  John, while emotional, managed to say what he’d hoped to say and even got a few chuckles.

I think in all the chaos I’d neglected to mention that we are the proud owners of a new black lab puppy, Tessabell aka Tess.  We’ve had her since the kids and I went to N Idaho.  She is a chewing, jumping, “pottying” machine but she does like to fetch toys.  We haven’t been the most attentive humans, often missing the sitting by the front door cue prior to potty accident, but hopefully we’ll all get our act together in the coming weeks.  She is also remarkably good at making sure we all keep our stuff off the floor.  She brings me countless shoes, gloves, and yesterday brought me the toilet brush.  Grant’s dog, Maisy, seems to like Tess, so the two of them and Ace are playing in Grant’s backyard today.  I think Maisy is going to go to Sarah’s (much to the dismay of Sarah’s cat), or she may go to one of Sarah’s friends who recently lost both her husband and her dog.  Maisy might be better off with the friend, but I hope she goes to Sarah’s so we get to see her from time to time.

Many thanks for your business, and your thoughts and prayers,

Things are remaining hectic here, and it is becoming clear that I need to learn some stress management methods sooner than later.  My go, go, go then crash with a severe headache or something that makes me stop for a few days method, leaves some things to be desired.  There is a lot of extra work to be done, with short deadlines and very high stakes, and I’m struggling to get things done, and maintain some form of balance.  My Dad has spent a tremendous amount of time helping us to sort things out, but there is still a mountain to do ASAP.

We finally have all of Mrs P’s grain cut and delivered to the elevator, and all of the hay picked up from her place.  Between baling too dry, and the neighbors cattle working on the bales, there are a lot of broken bales in piles there and here in our hay yard.  John is getting things sorted out at the farm, slowly but surely.

The kids are looking forward to their trip back east with Aunt Sarah’s family-which will begin tomorrow (Thursday).   I think we finally have all the laundry that was building up washed so they can pack tonight.

The rain and colder weather of late is making me realize that I figured I’d have to put my 14 yr old border collie down before winter.  He has kidney failure, poor appetite (he’s so skinny under his fur), weak hind end so he has a hard time with the stairs and can’t get into a vehicle.  I pray I’ll have the wisdom to know when it is time, and the strength to do it.

Our Targhee Ram (Clark) passed away suddenly a few weeks ago, (Stringy our three legged sheep, passed away while we were at our family reunion), so now I need to find a new ram.  I’ll be looking for a ram with traits that will make his daughters be good mamas-good wool, good feet, hardiness.  The US Sheep Research station in Dubois is having a live auction next week, and I’ve gotten some great rams from there in the past.  In fact our remaining ram (Dubois-he prefers the french pronunciation) came from there.  He is Suffolk-Hampshire-Columbia cross breed and his sons and daughters make great meat lambs.  His wool is too coarse to keep his daughters as future mothers.
