· We are able to take additional quarter and half beef orders, as well as whole and half lamb orders. We are looking at delivery dates in approx. April for these orders.
· We have a variety of scratch and dent (broken seal) meats, some older organs, and other items that we want to relocate from our freezer to yours.
I am going to be out of town most of next week. First I’m going to a farm bureau conference and then I’m going to visit my cousin for a couple of nights. John will have his hands full with keeping the stock cared for and the teenagers corralled so we’ve decided that we won’t take new pre-orders for the 13th. John will attend the winter market with a good supply of various cuts of meat, and will deliver a number of already organized orders that day. We’ll roll all orders for SLC over for pick up on the 27th of February.
We are looking forward to 2016 and we appreciate your going with us on this journey. Finding a path for our small herd of cattle and sheep and the land we steward to support our family has not been easy. This path still has its inherent challenges, but knowing you are all going along for the ride with us helps so much.

· We have some older organs, specifically lamb liver and beef tongue, that we want to relocate from our freezer to yours. We are offering discounts on these items to help them find new homes.
· We have a lots of sausage to choose from. Our current flavors include beef andouille, bratwurst, frankfurter, polish and sweet Italian. Lamb flavors include lamb and apple, garlic and rosemary, merguez and Italian lamb with sun dried tomato.
In addition to keeping all the animals fed and cared for, John is looking toward spring and is studying brochures about trees. We signed up for the Conservation Stewardship Program last summer and as part of that program agreed to renovate several of our tree rows (i.e. wind breaks). I hope it will be a wet spring and summer as that will make it far more likely that whatever trees we plant to thicken up our wind breaks will grow without a great deal of coddling. If it is a dry year perhaps we’ll find a way to have the newly planted trees be watered from our solar powered livestock water system. We are also looking at ways to improve how we care for our land and our livestock.
We have had incredible good luck so far in that three of our heifers have calved very early and all three calves and mothers are doing well. Clearly we had a “steer” that wasn’t quite a steer getting things accomplished last winter. At least the unauthorized father seems to have had good calving easy characteristics.
I’m trying to get our paperwork in order so we can get our taxes filed. We’ve gotten a second opinion on Grant’s paperwork disaster and now have even more reason to be optimistic that it will all be resolved favorably. Only time will tell, of course, but it doesn’t look like we are totally at the mercy of, and dependent on the kindness of, bureaucrats. Instead, we have several “legs to stand on” and can make them look at all the data we have spent hours locating and collating.
The saddest news is that I’m working up the courage to call and get an appointment to put my buddy, Jade, to sleep. He has been a great dog, a true friend, and a great member of our team. The next time the stock are headed somewhere they are not supposed to be (like the driveway and highway) I am surely going to miss his help. Jade came to us when he was approx. 2 years old, about 12 years ago. He had spent most of his life in an outside kennel and it took him a while to adjust to living in the house and having the little kids step over him. He was a nervous young border collie, full of energy and always ready for a job or a ride. I’m told the hardest thing to get dogs to do is to “push” livestock. This means to stay behind the sheep/cattle and guide their movement and direction from the back. Most collies want to “eye” the sheep and love to bring sheep to their masters. Amazingly enough the only thing Jade and I were able to figure out how to do was “push” livestock. Perhaps if I’d been some dog training school I would have been able to take advantage of his other abilities. I am going to miss my shaggy friend!
