The march toward winter is steady here. John is working hard to get everything ready for snow, the closure of our farm roads, and everything else that winter brings. He’s gotten our cows preg(nancy) checked and ready for the winter but we need to get the yearlings vaccinated, and the ewes need going through. We’ll mouth and bag (check teeth and udders) the ewes and decide who will be exiting the flock prior to the rams going out for breeding next month. We’ll need to stockpile some salt for the cows to have this winter as the road will become impassible at some point.
The two month plus push to get Grant’s (John’s dad’s) paperwork disaster sorted out is basically wrapped up. Now our team of professionals take over and we wait to see how things will resolve. It does look like some of the worst case scenarios we’ve feared are unlikely, but the landscape of our future is yet to be determined. I’ve been turning my attention to our business bookkeeping and everything that has been neglected for the last 6 months while Grant was ill and after he passed. My mom came to visit (work really) and spent days entering data so we can accurately calculate sales tax since it is now due. I’m getting a handle on who has put in deposits for beef and lamb orders and will shortly turn my attention to getting cutting instructions sorted out for all these orders.
At parent teacher conferences last week, it became evident that Tom has been suffering from my lack of time to help him with his math this fall. (I’m math mom, and john tends to be head editor). Now I’m so far behind in relearning college algebra I think I’ll need a tutor just so I can remember enough to help him. Thankfully, he is doing great in his other classes. We also had the unhappy experience of having Tom get a pretty serious concussion in an altercation at school. The headaches, inability to concentrate, light sensitivity etc have been scary. We decided to have a CT scan done last week. Thankfully it showed no bleeds or fractures, and he is showing signs of feeling better the last couple of days. Trying to balance the need to get the scan done, while investigating options for where to have it done was challenging. In the end, we were able to save $500 by driving him to Pocatello for the test, we have a very high deductible. I think I’m the only person who checks into prices based on the doctor’s staff’s response to my inquiries. Last week I noticed that Tom’s reflection in the car window was taller than me…and it has been confirmed that Tom is officially taller than Mom. I’m not sure when he grew taller, but it’s time for a new set of pants for the young man. Tom’s been enjoying going hunting with his friends this fall, and it’s a bit odd to not know where “exactly” he is at all times. It’s hard to believe that in just 20 days he’ll be 16!
We were devastated when our puppy, Tess, was run-over and killed at the farm 2 weeks ago. John, and Tom, are determined to have a duck retrieving dog next season, and so we have a new black lab puppy underfoot. The poor pup doesn’t know if his name is Tess or Zeke. My dad went and got me a baby (puppy) gate so at least I can lock little Zeke, and Jade, our old dog, in the kitchen when I need to run to the store, chauffer kids etc. Not having to put the dogs on chains or in the kennel when its wet and cold has been awesome. Also, Jade is entering the stage where I’m wanting to keep him in the house at night, instead of in the kennel. The gate makes it possible to keep him off the carpet, ‘cause he’s starting have old dog accidents too.
Becca is doing great in school, is enjoying being a cheerleader and is serving as manager for the girls basketball team again this year. She’s moved up the line in Job’s Daughters and is now Junior Princess. They are doing their major fundraiser of the year, and it has been hard to dedicate the time and energy to helping her sell wreaths all over the community. I think the group needs to look at doing a different fundraiser since there are only 3 girls, two sets of parents, who really help their kids sell these darned things.
I thoroughly enjoyed three weeks, or so, of being migraine free, but the medicine seemed to be having the side effect of making me unable to think or remember anything. I’m hopefully that the next medicine we try to prevent the headaches and nausea will work, but won’t scramble my marbles as badly as the last one. I’m not sure what is worse, losing a day or two a week like I did this week or feeling like all my marbles had been put in strange filing cabinets.
Before long we’ll be bringing the yearling cattle, newly weaned calves, and the sheep to town for the winter months. Time marches (often seems to rush) on and we are struggling to catch up. Many of our friends are also dealing with major challenges in their lives, and so we are often reminded to count our blessings. The challenges and trials we’ve been dealing with are minor compared to those of many others in the world, and in reality we truly are blessed.
Many thanks for your business, and your thoughts and prayers,
