Applications are now open for SPU’s Waste-Free Communities Matching Grant!

Application Deadline: March 24, 2023

Giving Room Project

Recycling and composting are great. But not creating waste in the first place is even better!

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is now accepting applications for the Waste-Free Communities Matching Grant. Have a new waste prevention community project or business idea in mind, or are you ready to take your current project to the next level? Up to $40,000 could be waiting to make your idea a reality.

Funding: There is a total fund of $200,000 to award for the 2023-25 grant cycle. Grant requests may range from $3,000 to $40,000 and awards are paid on a reimbursement basis. Award recipients may request up to 10% of the total grant award in advance to support project start-up costs. Projects must meet a 25% match requirement.

Eligibility: Businesses, nonprofits, community and neighborhood groups, schools, colleges, universities, institutions, faith-based organizations, and youth and children’s programs are all eligible to apply.

Project Requirements: Grant activities must increase waste prevention in Seattle. In addition to preventing waste, projects must advance one or more of the following priorities:

  1. Innovation – such as testing out a new waste prevention idea;
  2. Expand Equitable Access and Participation – such as engaging communities of color, people with disabilities, seniors, etc.; or
  3. Increase Equitable Community Benefits – such as creating jobs or increasing free resources available to people experiencing homelessness or food insecurity.

Application Process: Applications are due by 5:00 PM on March 24, 2023. Applications are available in several languages and may be submitted in print or video format. They may also be submitted in your preferred language; SPU will provide translation/interpretation.
