Exciting News about Lake City Greenways!

HelloFriends,

How many of you remember when we had Lake City Greenways going strong?  We worked on getting sidewalks, Greenways, safe crossings and a mini park in Olympic Hills where NE 133rd dead ends between 30th NE and 27th NE.  Remember all that?

El Lee, who lives east of Sandpoint Way and I (Muriel Lawty) living in LIttle Brook are talking about getting more projects going in Lake City again.  Who else wants to join in?  We would love to hear from you about what needs to be done in your neighborhood and how we all can work together to keep good things happening in Lake City.  

Please reply back to us (reply to all) so we can find out who is interested.  What ideas do you have?  What needs to be done to make our streets safer? We can get a lot done by working together and every effort, every little bit counts!

I'm interested. 

My ideas: 

- making 115th safer for kids walking to/from school (ditches on north side and parked cars on the south block safe routes)

- hoping to slow east-west traffic that cuts through from 35th to SPW on non-arterials

-  is there a way to remind drivers about how the traffic circles work? i see so many people turning left in front of them

Good ideas, Lisa! I'll throw out there that the bike lane on 125th east of 35th disappears as the road bends and becomes SPW. Having some kind of acknowledgement of bikes on SPW would be great, since often riding on SPW is part of the process of getting to/from the BG Trail.

Is it silly to talk about reminder signs on busy roads that every intersection is a crosswalk? I struggle to get cars to let me cross both 35th and SPW at 120th and find that stepping out into traffic is the only way to get them to stop

I've been thinking about making hand-painted 'pretty' signs that gently message about community and safety and kindness but also struggle with having time for such endeavors

I’m concerned about two blocks that connect 35^th Ave NE to the Stay Healthy Street on 37^th Ave NE. A lot of families with kids pass by on these blocks and they’re not good for walking. Improving them is important to give easier access to the Stay Healthy Street and to Cedar Park playfield and school.

• My higher concern is the block of NE 130^th between 35^th NE and 37^th NE. There are no sidewalks. Cars park too close to intersection of 35^th NE which is bad for sightlines and for a pedestrian or parent with a stroller getting around them.  The ditches are deep in places, with water much of the year (due to spring water runoff which needs to be accommodated). When cars are moving by, it’s a unpleasant block to walk.
• NE 135^th from 35^th to 37^th is also a concern because the small sidewalk is very uneven due to tree roots in several places. Not possible to navigate in a wheelchair. So pedestrians go into the street.

 

I’m going to the city’s walking tour this afternoon to point out these problem blocks.

 

Would be great to see Lake City Greenways revitalize. We’re so grateful for all the work this group did that gave us our Stay Healthy Streets.

Yes - the block I reside on - NE 130th between 35th & 37th is a high traffic one for both pedestrians and cars - the connection from Cedar Park to Lake City proper - bus stops, retail, etc. - and is very dangerous, particularly in the darker, wetter seasons. The no sidewalks, steep incline, drainage ditches and cars parked on both sides on each street and close to the corners combined with the speeding on 35th are ALL issues contributing. Now that 37th is a permanent Stay Healthy Street there should be some improvements made to the thoroughfare blocks connecting it to public transportation and the business core. Some more sidewalks in key places and improvements to the few we have in and along Cedar Park would go a long way.

I too would love to see improvements to bike riding through the area.  

I'd love to see the healthy streets bike path extended south of 125th/SPW down 38th which can serve as a critical connection to:

1)John Rodgers, 

2)Nathan Hale,

3)Meadowbrook pool area, 

4)and the Burke Gillman trail via the various access points near 95th/Mathews Beach, thus avoiding the giant hill to get up from The Burke in the area of 125th.

Plenty of bikes already use this route on 38th Ave and it would be great to provide greater protection to those users and make access to Lake City by bike much easier and safer. 

This seems like a relatively cheap yet high return change which I hope makes it on the updated list of proposals.

Since the southbound bus stop is on that side of the street, it's not uncommon for people to just walk along the edge of the road for those two blocks instead of crossing to the east side to use the sidewalk and then cross back again to the bus stop. It's super dangerous because there isn't a good bike line or much of a shoulder.

I'm very interested though I don't have enough time these days.

I don't have a specific route but I'm very interested in getting to/from both the Burke and Interurban when biking. Basically connecting to longer separated trails connecting other places. More connections to the Pinehurst Light Rail station would be great too.

I'm riding with an almost 6 year old these days so I'm often avoiding even the bike lanes and trying to find the traffic calmed Greenways. I've become more and more of a fan of those when they're working.

I'm all for more sidewalks too obviously anywhere we can.

Long time reader, first time poster here...I made some armature diagrams to show some areas that I think are especially awful (see below).

1.  I especially want to echo Maia about 115th and LCW:

• On the east side of LCW, on both sides of the road, the side walk disappears and turns into a parking lot for business.  
  • especially troublesome is the parking for Bulger Lock and NW RockHounds, which force people walking into the road if there are any cars parked in the lots.
• On the west side of LCW, on the north side of the road, the sidewalk also disappears to make way for street parking (both sides of the road are already huge parking lots for the car dealership, so it feels pretty ridiculous).

2.  east side 35th and 95th (perhaps too far from Lake City for this project?):

• similar situation as above. 
• Particularly bad is the north side of 95th, where the side walk ends at a retaining wall that forces all pedestrians into the right side of the arterial, which at that point is used as fluid mix of street parking and as an unofficial right hand turn lane onto 35th. Beyond the wall are parking spaces for an apartment building which, when filled, again forces pedestrians into the road. 
• The next property is a church that houses several organizations, including a preschool. Getting to that building with a stroller is pretty harrowing at times!

3. 35th in general 

• could use speed humps and it has tiny narrow sidewalks!

I'm El, and I'm so excited to help revive Lake City Greenways. I love this neighborhood, I love biking and walking, and I want everyone to be able to get around with safety, dignity and joy.     

I've recorded all your ideas and areas of concerns. The next step is to categorize and identify what we want to tackle! To kick off the revival of the Lake City Greenways, let's meet in person to do this! 

We have two date options for meeting at the Lake City library: Tues, Oct. 14 or Wed, Oct. 15. To ensure as many people can make it as possible, would you please fill out this Doodle Poll to let us know which of these dates work better? Please make use of the "If Necessary" option!

I noticed the comment about the disappearing bike lane at the curve where NE 125th Street connects with Sand Point Way. This a very dangerous intersection for bicyclists, pedestrians and motorists. Removing parking on Sand Point Way between NE 125th Street and NE 123rd Street would provide space for both bike lanes and sidewalks. This should be considered as a high priority project, especially since NE 123rd Street is such an important connection to the Cedar Park neighborhood east of Sand Point Way and 39th Avenue NE, including the Burke Gilman Trail. A stop light, or at least a marked pedestrian crossing with flashing warning lights, also should be considered at the intersection of NE 123rd Street and Sandpoint Way.

Excited to see this group reactivated!

Lots of great ideas for improvements already.

+1 to Maia's issues crossing at 35th & 120th - the city put a low cost walkway in between the former LA Fitness and 35th on 120th but the crossings (for both people and cars) at 35th & 120th & 123rd where there are also bus stop pairs are truly treacherous. Curb bulbs or some other intervention is badly needed here. (They also redid the ADA ramps at these corners, but made no other improvements at that time sadly.)

All of the streets in core of Lake City with no curbs/sidewalks and lined with parked cars like 123rd, 33rd, etc.

105th between 35th and John Rogers may need to be looked at now that the rebuilt school is open and cars flow on 105th instead of 110th in the old configuration. The 39th/105th intersection is not great during AM/PM school and work commute times since 105th is culturally treated as an arterial, despite having the traffic circle - all way stop could be needed there but have only gone through that intersection a few times since school started this fall.

Bike crossing/diverter at Ravenna & NE 95th St usually gets blocked by cars so it can be difficult to cross by bike there - could they at least put down the green crossbike stripes there?

Pet peeve - no official connection between the Cedar Park & Wedgwood Greenways has ever shown up on an SDOT future plan map, though with current traffic on the side streets between these it is a lower priority but the wayfinding signage and designation alone could be valuable. It took me a long time of testing various routes before I settled on my usual path to get to the Wedgwood greenway from Meadowbrook area.
