Hello to all,

Summer has come and gone... Is anyone interested in resuming LUG
meetings for the winter?

Fall's just about gone too. I think there's still a "market" for a LUG
on the shore. I guess it's a matter of advertising. And that means
creating a real ShoreLUG Web site.

Joe,

Maybe the thing to do is build a website, then see who contacts the group. If there is interest then hold meetings.

Or just have a group that meets online in a chatroom.

Glenn,

If you need help with putting together a website I would be more than
help (volunteer). I have a website up for my home owners association
and I work on this stuff all the time (Front end and backend). I also
think that meeting online is a good option. There is a lot of free
service out there that would make it easy to share Linux information.

I also have another Idea that I will email you about tonight. This
conversation about meeting (learning) online is very similar to
something I am working on for my final Graduate school project.

Two concrete issues with the web site that should get settled are 1)
site hosting and 2) site name (Glenn?). For site hosting, I know there
are guy/gals out there with T1 lines going into 24/7 machines in their
basements, but for various reason (reliability being a big one), I
think some paid web hosting service is the answer.

Joe,

Two good points:

1) site hosting............ a paid web hosting service has advantages...  it solves hosting problems but it requires agreement on the 'paid' part. service fees are based on length of service.  if we were to sign up for, say, two years, would the payment come out of a LUG treasury? perhaps due to our non-profit status we could get free hosting with a linux advocacy group

2) site name.............. i like the Rutgers and Princeton approach....... Rutgers University Student Linux Users Group is reduced to RUSLUG and Linux Users Group in Prince is LUGIP.  Hence, LUG-at-JerseyShore would be LUGAJS. The only place this would be used would be in the address www.lugajs.org. That is my thought on the matter, but we can discuss other options.

Do any of your members already have paid hosting and the ability to add
additional domains for free or cheap?

Most domain registrars provide minimalistic hosting at no extra charge
when you buy a domain. I doubt the service quality is high, but the
price is right for starting off.

At LUG/IP and RUSLUG, we've been calling ya'll JSLUG. None of
jslug.com, .org, or .net are taken according to my whois queries.

Joe good points. I have personally been helping out home owners
association get their web site together. We are currently using a Free
Hosting Site which give us an option to upgrade our services. Thais
might be something to consider.

As far as Domain names are concerned there are many way to set this up
including going with a domain name service from Godaday.com that you
can point to a website. I have will take a look to day after my web
hosting meeting with the homeowners association president. and see what
i can find out.

I will also see If I can find out how other LUGS have there web hosting
setup. Maybe there is a deal for non profit organizations.

Will keep you all posted

Here's what I know:

CHLUG Receives free hosting from phpwebhosting.com. I think the
group organisor knows someone in phpwebhosting.com's management.

RUSLUG Hosts a server on Rutger's campus

LUG/IP One of the members who works in IT hosts the website on a work
server

ACGNJ (Lunics) Is hosted using GoDaddy services

I've got domain registry experience with

registerfly.com (Avoid them like a deadbeat uncle. The horror stories
are rife.)

and

directnic.com (been with them less than a year, so I'll withhold
judgement)

There's also register4less.com which is advertised on
http://userfriendly.org.

Register4less will give you a paltry 5 MB of banner-free web hosting
space if you register your domain with them for a year for $14.95. You
can buy an additional 10 MB for $12 per year.

Directnic will give you 20 MB of banner-supported web hosting space if
you register your domain with them for a year for $15.

Joe I also did some looking into free web hosting options and came
across this:

http://www.lug.org.uk/lugmasters/subdomain.php

The "UK Linux User Groups" looks like they might be an option for free
hosting. I'm not sure if we are not qualified for this service since we
are in the US. I did not want to contact this organization until I got
some feed back from people (Glen, JustJoe). When your guys have a
chance take a look and tell me what you think. There are a number of
free hosting options but I thought that this organization may be a good
place to start.
