EVENT: ISLAMIC AWARENESS WEEK AT LA TROBE
The La Trobe University Islamic Society will be hosting the annual Islamic Awareness Week (IAW) for 2011 from the 11th-15th April. The aim of Islamic Awareness Week is to educate the wider community about Islam through a series of events held at La Trobe Uni, in Bundoora. We invite everyone to come, in order to gain an insight into pertinent and topical issues about Islam in the world today, and understand our perspective on old-age questions which we should never stop asking...
The theme for the IAW this year is "Islam: The Solution" and we will be looking at what Islam has to offer to the individual, and to the world. The weeks events will consist of the following activities:
Monday: Free BBQ @ Simpsons Lawn, 12pm-3pm
Tuesday: Debate night (more details on poster and below)
Wednesday: Bake sale @ the Agora 11am-3pm
Thursday: Prayer room open day, 12pm-3pm
Friday: Lecture night, interstate speaker, free dinner (more details below and on poster)
The two major events during the IAW is the debate on Tuesday 12th April and the lecture on Friday 15th April:
DEBATE
Topic: Islam or Secular Liberalism: Which is the Way Forward?
Date: Tuesday 12th April
Time: 5pm-7.30pm
Location: Agora Theatre, La Trobe Uni (Bundoora campus)
Exploring questions of..
-Which one is better for our times?
-Which is better at solving the world's problems?
-Which provides better governance for the world?
Islam related issues seem prevalent in society today, whether they be in Muslim majority countries or not. Why is this so? What is Islamic sharia law? What do we mean by the khilafa? or Muslim ummah? You hear about these terms in the news and on television, but what do Muslims have to say about it? and what do others have to say about it?
These topics will be discussed in the format of a debate and will be an intellectual discourse between two different ideas.
FEATURING:
Br. Yassir Morsi- President of Muslim Students Association of Victoria
Dr. John L Perkins- President of the Secular Party of Australia
LECTURE

Date: Friday 15th April
