Liberia observes scout movement week - May 28, 2009
Liberia observes scout movement week
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has issued a proclamation, declaring
May 25 - 30, Liberia Annual Scout Week, to be observed throughout the
country along with the 5th West African Zonal Conference.
A Foreign Ministry release says President Johnson has called on the
national leadership of all Scout Movements in the country in active
collaboration and cooperation with the ministries of Youth and Sports,
and Education, Religious organizations, among others to organize
appropriate programs, highlighting the spirit and mission of the Scout
Movement throughout the country and the sub-region.
The Proclamation further noted that since its founding in 1907 by Lord
Beden Powel, the Universal Mission of Scout Movement countries to call
for the provision of good citizenship, character building, educational
programs for boys, girls and young adults.
The Liberian Legislature, on January 26, 1923, passed an act granting
a charter establishing the Liberian National Scout Movement.
