Oregon’s forest history: It’s an integral part of who we are as a
state, how we have grown, and what we have become. The Oregon
Department of Forestry recognizes and values this history, and what it
means to Oregonians.
At 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2nd, the department will host a dedication
for a newly-opened Forest History Center on the Oregon Department of
Forestry’s Salem campus, at 2600 State Street. The public is invited
to attend.
Representatives of the other organizations most involved in the
center’s development – Keep Oregon Green Association, Civilian
Conservation Corps Alumni, and Oregon Forestry Retirees Association –
will also participate in the event, and there will be special displays
and an opportunity to visit and tour the center itself.
The Forest History Center provides a place and an opportunity for the
public to view and learn about the history of forestry in Oregon.
It also provides a location, historical materials, and an opportunity
for individuals to research information related to Oregon’s forest
history.
Opening displays at the center include histories of reforestation and
fire look-outs, information about large fires in our state over time,
and a look back in time at the Civilian Conservation Corps and other
New Deal programs and the critical contributions they made to Oregon’s
forests.
While a few of the displays will remain permanently, an important
feature is that most of the displays will rotate every four to six
months, allowing for people to see new things each time they visit.
The center, which will be primarily staffed by volunteers, will be
open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and at other
times by pre-arrangement.
More information on the center is available on the center’s website at
