Dear Friends and Colleagues, 🌷

We are very excited to announce the return of Cal State LA University Library’s Special Collections and Archives' third annual research symposium and community archives collection preservation initiative, Sounds of the Underground.

This year’s theme, New Wave’s Diasporic Kinships, will feature a keynote by Elizabeth Ai, Emmy award-winning producer, filmmaker, historian and author. Ai’s groundbreaking work, New Wave: Rebellion and Reinvention in the Vietnamese Diaspora, examines the lives and cultural production of Vietnamese teenagers growing up in Orange County during the 1980s following the Fall of Saigon. Ai’s book and corresponding documentary film, “New Wave,” are a love letter to this first generation of Vietnamese youth who sought refuge, freedom, and inventive self-fashioning through the fast pulse, digital soundscapes, and neon colorscapes of Vietnamese New Wave music.
We invite you to bring your students and join us for the three-day event:
  • Day 1 (October 21): Screening of the documentary film, “New Wave,” followed by a keynote talk and discussion with Elizabeth Ai.
Space is limited, and we'd love for students to attend. Please have students RSVP using the link above.
  • Day 2 (October 22): Showcase of music studies research by Cal State LA students and the launch of an archival exhibit featuring photographs, sound clips, and artifacts illuminating the life and vitality of Vietnamese New Wavers.
  • Day 3 (October 23): A community archiving event, zine-making workshop, and musical performances and DJ sounds cherished by New Wave lovers.
For the full event schedule and more information, please visit: https://libguides.calstatela.edu/sounds
I’ve also attached a poster with a save-the-date and a three-day overview. Please share this invitation and attached flyers with your students and anyone who may be interested.
We look forward to seeing you there!
