A
nationwide book ban bill has been introduced in Congress: H.R. 7661. If
passed, it could censor LGBTQ+ voices, especially transgender people,
and force schools across the country to remove books from their
libraries.
H.R.
7661 would label any literature or materials referencing “gender
dysphoria or transgenderism” as “sexually oriented material.” The bill
would then deny federal funding to schools that include these books in
their libraries, pressuring educators and librarians to remove stories
that reflect the real lives and experiences of transgender and nonbinary
students.
Public
schools should be places where young people can learn, explore ideas,
and see themselves reflected in the stories they read. But this bill
threatens that principle by using federal funding as leverage to control
what books students can access.
