Hello,
To introduce myself, I'm the editor of the Guardian's Local network
(more on that here;http://www.guardian.co.uk/local) and I'm looking
forward to meeting you all on Saturday. Although my primary reason for
attending is to listen, learn and understand more about the issues and
concerns that you all have, Hugh suggested that some of you might be
interested in a session about working with newspapers. Happy to help
if I can, so please do let me know if that interests you, and if
there's any specific aspects you'd like to look at.
Best regards
Sarah

That's great. Thanks Sarah.

My thoughts here are that to some extent if we're running a local site,
we're all reporting in some way. What sort of relationships might we think
about with local newspapers? Is it a learning one where we're able to pick
up hard won journalistic skills? (There are already some interesting models
developing). Or is there a news sharing dialogue to be had? I general, my
sense is that there's plenty to be gained for both sides from collaboration.
It's just a matter of what and how.

Hugh

I'm one of the lucky ones who has two high quality local papers on my patch (the Camden New Journal and the Ham & High). I've been able to build good informal relationships with both and the community certainly informs some elements of the news agenda in these papers from time to time. As a former journalist, I'm very interested in how we can work with the local and national press where relevant, so count me in for any such session.

Hi Jonathan, I look forward to seeing you there. I'm thinking about
the best topics to cover and have come up with; linking good practice,
PCC type issues, how newspapers are structured and something around
copyright.
These may, or may not, be the big issues for all of you so please do
let me know if there's a particular aspect you'd like addressing. I've
also opened up the debate to bloggers/sites outside London by posting
these thoughts on my blog;

All thoughts and contributions welcome!

This may fall under "how newspapers are structured", but I've certainly had some interesting conversations about newspaper resources and content sharing. Also a more fundamental point about the role of local media generally in a community - even as basic as do bloggers etc. want to support or supplant their local newspaper

It does depend whether there is a local paper covering the area of the
"hyperlocal" website in question.

The Finsbury Park area, as I have mentioned elsewhere, is partly in
each of three boroughs so altho' an area in its own right it is only a
small part of the territory of the respective Borough based papers.
This suggests that a successful Finsbury Park site would not compete
with the local press as, in fact, there is no local press as such -
but could well feed into, and be a source of material for the existing
press.
