There seemed to be a general consensus at the close of play yesterday
that it would be valuable to keep the momentum going.

We talked about two things - an online space and regular meetups.

Here's an easy job-done proposal to address the first of those and to
help, perhaps with the second.

After James Hatt's post yesterday I remembered that I'd set up a NIng
group back in the Spring when the idea of London Neighbourhoods
Unconference was first mooted. Busy-ness however got the better of me
and I haven't had the time to launch it. However we paid for it for a
year when we renewed our other sites so we might as well use it.

I've tried to strip it down and focus just a forum area for now, but
as we develop resources we can add static pages. So, for example we
can add some guidance about the legal situation and the code of
practice we talked about yesterday and link to/add info from sites
like Ultra-local.

What we might also do to kick things off is to start a discussion
thread on the main topics from yesterday, taking any info from this
group as a starter.

From my perspective, the aim of the space will be to provide a place
to share learning, ideas, ask questions and facilitate real-world
links.

It's there. It's paid for. It's hassle free - so you're all invited to
join. The address is http://neighbourhoodsonline.ning.com

What do you think? If people like the idea, I'll send out an invite
beyond this group in a few days' time.

We'd love to make this as collaborative as possible so of there are a
few people who'd like to pitch in and help run it, that would be
marvellous. You can either leave a note here or mail me at

As I mentioned at the end of the day I've been working on a site that
will act as a Hub to have these conversations and organise meet-ups -
obviously there's crossover with the Ning so I'll chat with Hugh about
that.

In the meantime, I had the idea of starting hyperlocal cafés - blog
post here: http://journallocal.co.uk/2010/09/25/hyperlocal-cafes-continue-the-conversation/

I am happy to help on the organising of the follow up meetings/pub
visits/brainstorming sessions as long as there were a few of us doing
the organising....

One thing we did with CityCamp, was to take the web feed from the
mailing list and plug it into a:

1. Facebook Page
2. Twitter (subjects with added #citycamp)
3. A Ning group on the existing site GovLoop site that had a critical
mass of participants
(See links on right to see how easy this is: http://e-democracy.org/citycamp

I've really enjoyed your exchanges here in this online space - it seems to work.

If Ning worked well at sustained exchange in small groups, it would
make sense to drop having an e-mail discussion list. However, as long
as Ning doesn't send full text of posts nor allow full replies via
e-mail, it doesn't seem to work very well on its own IMHO.

Also, if you would like, we'd be glad to donate a more customizable
generic mailing list which (a step up from Google Groups) online group
that can be tied into the proposed Ning site.

Some advantages:

1. Full text web feed - can be fed into Ning site, used in news reader
(all posts)
2. Customize [Subject] tag for e-mail users (can be done with current
Google Group FYI)
3. Web-only or "topic" digest option - Looks like linear web forum for
those who prefer that interface
4. We can feed a complementary Facebook Page - note another example:
http://www.facebook.com/digitalinclusionnetwork
5. Feed into Twitter - Example: http://twitter.com/edeminclusion

For those looking for a sharper web-interface, check out the
development@ group tied to the open source tool we use - Homepage
Rebuild coming soon: http://groupserver.org/groups/development

Let me know and we can set it up in minutes and donate it to your effort.

Stephen

I take the point about e-mail being so ubiquitous - and the point
about free flowing conversation being interrupted by truncated
messaging but it looks like Ning have addressed this issue at least in
part ... in one direction anyway... as this link from their help
section indicates http://help.ning.com/cgi-bin/ning.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3836

however there is a balance to be struck between having all the
discussion channeled via e-mail and the delightful serendipity of
being "nudged" to return to a site full of all sorts of other
hyperlocal loveliness!

Thanks

Sounds good Giles. How about punting something out on Neighbourhoodsoline?

Thanks again for your help on Saturday. Much appreciated.

Richard,

Thanks for the tip on full-text notices from Ning.

Hugh, can you turn those on if you haven't? I've aleady asked a major Ning site to turn on that newer feature.

Also, if you folks aren't game for a London e-list, one way to share value with your community via ning would be to feed the international Locals Online group into a section on your Ning site (this is what we do with CityCamp and GovLoop). (Locals Online does function like an e-list for those who find participation convenient that way (particularly smartphone users trying to use their idle time effectively): http://e-democracy.org/locals - Join up.)

Gathering local online community hosts - particularly across technology preferences and the different news-centered versus community-building frames is like herding cats. After a year of recruiting we've managed to get 250 or so folks (40+ who introduced their sites/forums mostly in the US) with a few from the UK in an international attempt at knowledge sharing. I fully respect city by city, country by country spaces and look forward to the Ning site (and will encourage or UK volunteers to sign-up) but ultimately the lessons are global and need to be shared widely.

Cheers,
Steve
