There are plenty of web feeds out there that you can use to add a little
bit of local colour to your site. In fact my main local site, Planet
Balham (http://planetbalham.org.uk/) is nothing but an aggregator of web
feeds.

If anyone is interested, I'd like to talk a bit about how you can find
interesting web feeds and how you can integrate them into your sites. I
don't know what level of technical expertise people have, but I could
also explain a little about what web feeds are.

Let me know if you're interested.

Cheers,

Dave...

This sounds like some interesting input Dave. Tools that can enhance
quality content on a site without significant time commitment are very
much to be welcomed!

Thanks for the feedback, Hugh. I'll get some ideas together for Saturday.

I'd appreciate a quick straw poll though. As I said before I'm unsure
about the level of technical knowledge of the people on this list. So it
would be useful to me to know if people would like me to include a quick
introduction to what web feeds are.

Thanks,

Hi

I'm getting totally finger-tied, there is so much I want to write about on all the topics posted to this group. Hope I'm not tingue tied at the event.

Really looking forward to coming over & meeting everyone this Saturday.

My technical knowledge is extremely limited, but I have an idea of what web feeds are & would like to know more.

Thanks Pauline

I run www.BeckenhamTown.us a Ning.com based platform web community
site
I use RSS feeds from local newpapers, job sites, local blogs, BBC site
for weather, TfL (Transport for London) for traffic updates, feeds
from Twitter for any local tweet, Flickr and YouTube feeds of
Beckenham themed pics and videos and a whole lot more.
I can't make Saturday now so please if anyone wants to talk to me mre
about this or any other digital media related issue you can best get
me on j...@spaceandtime.eu.com where I run the digital media
department.
I'm working with Hackney Council, helping them with social and digital
media and would therefore love to have been there this weekend and
exchange details with everyone. Local councils need our local sites
and indeed a lot of them have RSS feeds you can add into your sites
too.

Funny enough the one thing I would have loved was a webinar live feed
of the conference all day to put on my site and therefore be able to
be their in spirit listening to all the issues and conversations.
Perhaps that is being done, if it is someone tell me quick.

All the best

That sounds really useful - will be in touch ... I have been setting up http://stourbridgecommon.wordpress.com over recent week for a Cambridge based local community interest group the Friends of Stourbridge Common and would find this extremely helpful.

Have also found the tutorials on TalkAboutLocal extremely helpful (thanks William, Nicky, Mike and Claire) and would urge other wordpress users to head in that direction for support as needed.

Still hope to be there on Saturday but a rather difficult family situation may stop that happening but if not in person will be following on twitter as @e11ie5 and @FofSC

thanks

Eileen,

We aggregate a bunch of feeds from different places: local council feeds, MPs twitter feeds, local planning applications, councillor blogs, things the MPs have said in the House of Commons and present it all on one page.

I am trying to get a similar feed to your one from the planning alerts
web site. I like the way you have done yours and would like to see if
the Webjam platform that we use can accommodate it in the same way.

How did you get the feeds to work on your site? Planning alerts can
send out e-mails but it doesn't look like that on your site, maybe you
did something else. Some tips would be really appreciated. I also like
the idea of MPs comments being streamed to the site as well. Sadly I
fear it will be blank for any mention of our area but then that speaks
volumes in it's own right.

Many thanks

This is what we've done with a Planning Alerts feed:

http://www.london-se1.co.uk/planning/applications

- this uses Yahoo Pipes to merge several feeds and make the data from Lambeth and Southwark appear in a standard format.

Yahoo pipes looks like great fun. I will play and see what it can do.
Did you go direct to the council web sites (Lambeth and Southwark) or
use the planningalerts site directly? Doesn't look as though they have
a fee from their site beyond e-mails but maybe I missed it.

Thanks

Not sure about planning feeds but you can get a feed of comments made by your MP.

Go to:

http://www.theyworkforyou.com/

Enter a post code in the constituency you cover and it should take you to the MPs page with the
feed.

If you look at the examples on that page (you will need to use an RSS reader, like Google Reader), you can see how it generates the list of nearby planning applications, based on either a postcode, or a lat/long calculation. You can then format the output as you choose.

We did the same with the MP feeds from theyworkforyou.com

Annette,

I can explain what's going on here.

Web feeds are computer-readable files. Humans can (just about)
understand them but they're far more useful when left to the computers.

For that reason modern web browsers (Firefox, certainly, and I assume
IE) don't display a web feed when you click on a link that leads to one.
Instead, they offer you the option of picking an application (or a web
site) to handle web feeds for you. Once you've chosen an application,
all web feeds will be handled by it.

It seems that someone in the past has configured your browser to send
all web feeds to Bloglines. Bloglines is a web feed reader web site. You
can subscribe to as many web feeds as you want and read them all in one
place.

Bloglines was really popular a few years ago, but its early success has
been rather eclipsed by Google Reader. Its owners have therefore taken
the decision to close it down. That explains the message that you are
seeing.

Your only problem is working out how to reconfigure your browser so that
it no longer tries to use Bloglines to handle web feeds. If you tell me
which browser (and which version) you are using then I can try to help
you with that.

Cheers,

Dave...

Many thanks for your prods in the right direction. We now have live
fees from parliament and also the planning alerts. Still trying to get
a map up and visible for planning alerts. I can see them all in Yahoo
maps but have yet to figure out how to embed in web site. Tried the
KML extract for Google earth but it only shows one of the pins, the
rest are there but not visible.

Anyhow, great progress and thanks for the tips.

here's another question:
for example, there's 10 different websites that we'd like to have the
feeds from on people's republic of southwark - my partner has set up
two so far, for london se1 & counterfire but i'd like them all to
merge, so you get the top, say, 10 stories from whoever's published
them (from any of the different websites we're getting the feeds from)
- for example, the top story may be from london se1, then the next one
may be from the parliament, the next from the guardian etc... hope
this makes sense & can be done?
also, james - what are yahoo pipes?

Lili,

There are a number of methods to achieve what you want. Yahoo Pipes is
probably the easiest approach. Pipes is a tool for combining content
from multiple web feeds.

Go to http://pipes.yahoo.com/ and either watch some of the tutorials -
or just leap in and press the 'create a pipe' button.

If you have any specific questions I'll be glad to try to answer them.
