i run www.kingscrossenvironment.com in north london and help peopel
all over the country with new local sites in deprived areas through a
busines called talk about local http://talkaboutlocal.org

so many of the issues i tackle in kings cross involve local govenrment
and public service providers i wondered if it was worth having a
session on working with local government and the place of hyperlocal
sites in the big society?

Good session Will - this area is a key part of our research and
on-the-ground projects. I'll be very interested to hear of other people's
experiences and how other people in London see this working.

I'd be on for this session. This is an area I am very interested in how Hyperlocal sites can be useful for communities in dealing with their local government & service providers. I kinda like the idea of Hyperlocal sites becoming a 'local corporate memory' for the community.(from Will I think)

Hugh and I have some data from recent small survey of councillors and
officers, plus a handful of interviews with selection of same -
results could be of interest to people and relate to this session. I
wont have had the time to process the results but will have headlines
to share and discuss.

Just had interesting meeting with new officer in charge of one of the
local safer neighbourhood teams. In order to get up to speed on what
the crime and anti-social behaviour issues are he said that he simply
read through the entire correspondence on our local web site. He now
knows where the hot spots are, speeding traffic issues, mugging etc
etc. He is posting up feedback and what the SNT teams have been up to.
He uses the postings and info on the site as part of his evidence
gathering for getting resource to be allocated to an issue or area.
His previous area he was posted to he said, had no local community web
site and he was so glad that there was one in his new location as it
made their job so much easier.

There is hope yet.....
